Thailand on Friday (April 1) reported 28,379 new COVID-19 cases, 23,843 recoveries and 92 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,656,726 with 25,222 deaths.

The news comes as the updated measures for entering the Kingdom of Thailand have been announced and made official in the Royal Gazette, Thailand’s legal bulletin, starting on April 1st.

Travelers are no longer required to provide a negative RT-PCR test within 72 hours of departure. However, the RT-PCR test requirement for the on-arrival date remains unchanged.

Travelers must have a fully paid hotel reservation confirmation for the arrival date which must include an RT-PCR test, ATK test kit, and airport pick-up. Thailand Pass must still be completed and approved prior to arrival in Thailand.**

Thailand on Friday reported an all-time record high of 28,379 new official COVID cases and 92 new COVID deaths, the latter setting a new 2022 yearly high for deaths.

Friday's update by the Thai Ministry of Public Health marked the first time the country's official daily case count passed the 28,000 mark, and the first time this year that new daily COVID deaths exceeded 90.

Friday's new COVID case count surpassed not only the prior 2022 record high of 27,560 set only yesterday, but also was Thailand's highest daily case tally since the start of the pandemic in 2020. The peak last year only exceeded 23,000.

In addition, Friday's update also saw the country set a new 2022 record high of 1,828 COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition, passing the prior yearly record of 1,808 set yesterday.

Total current COVID cases reported also rose markedly to 251,214, falling just shy of the 2022 record daily high of 251,936 set on March 27.

In one other key indicator, no doubt because of Friday's yearly record number of new deaths, the count of COVID cases hospitalized and requiring intubation to breathe fell by one to 712, down from yesterday's yearly record high of 713.

All the new yearly record highs reported on Friday also meant that daily new official cases, daily new deaths, total current cases, and seriously ill COVID cases in hospitals all were higher than the comparable figures from one week ago.

Official COVID case counts are at best a low-end approximation in Thailand, where many cases go unreported, and are subject to typical upward swings during the week and declines during weekend periods, although serious hospitalization figures are likely a more reliable indicator of current COVID trends.

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and intubated patients peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

I believe this shows just how rampant the virus is in Thailand.  In my view we can x's this by between 5 and 10 just to be closer to the reality of cases.  The expanding cases prior to the Songkran exodus will only fuel a major explosion of cases throughout all of Thailand, much like last years travel did.  Of course I am sure this Government is hoping it doesn't but then silently they are praying for it to happen and some type of herd immunity takes over.  The new travel requirements for entering the country really are not a change as many of the transit locations still require you to have been pre-flight tested, and to return to the US you still must test within 24 hours of flying.

Not even the highest number of PCR test and ATK tests together..... Of course the numbers will rise. The Government wants to show that Songkran is dangerous and by rising numbers the Thai people will believe it too, they think. Is that no brainwashing??

Far from brainwashing, but in the end they play the fear game.  Had from day one this government had been truthful and transparent then they might have had a different response from the public, and no not like the western countries people responded.  The Government thinks that they need to keep the public in the dark on many things Covid related instead of telling the truth.

In an article in the BP today the Rural Doctors Society is taking the Government to task in regards to the published ATK test numbers.  They are questioning yesterdays numbers because when you total up just 3 provinces who posted yesterday those numbers are greater than what the CCSA posted......lack of transparency is the unfortunate reality.

Is my gf and her hen group weird.

So tomorrow a group of them meet at one of the beer park restaurant type joints.

They each bring a rapid test result to show negative.

Nuts in my book.

I won't be taking my negative test to Soi 4 tomorrow.

Well of course they are, goes without saying. But this to me typifies how Thai people take Covid seriously. They do no more than what was previously a requirement of any SHA+ approved establishment.

I see the Thai MoPH has produced a nice 3 minute PR video, with EN subtitles, encouraging locals to get their COVID vaccines ahead of the Songkran holiday:

The following helped me to get things in perspective.  The problem is that any phenomenon involving 65 million people may involve high numbers.  This was taken from yesterday's report from Chonburi posted by a respected member:

https://thepattayanews.com/2022/03/31/chonburi-announces-1414-new-and-confirmed-cases-of-covid-19-and-four-new-deaths/

In particular:10 people were listed as being in serious condition in Chonburi currently, either on a ventilator or with pneumonia. Five of them had received two doses of vaccination and the other five were not vaccinated. According to the Chonburi Department of Public Health, the vast majority of recent cases, at 99.680 percent, are mild or asymptomatic.

The four new deaths were 49, 78, 83, and 89 years old with severe personal health problems and pre-existing conditions. None of them were vaccinated.

Prayut warns Thais not to loose their guard as pre-arrival RT-PCR test scrapped

By Panithan Onthaworn

screenshot_17301.jpg

The Thai government reminded the public to maintain strict health precautions as the pre-arrival Covid-19 test requirement for foreign visitors is phased out starting from Friday.

From April 1, vaccinated foreign travelers will no longer be required to get a RT-PCR certificate before traveling. However, the on-arrival RT-PCR test and self-administered antigen test on day five are still mandatory.

“Don’t lower your guard,” government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana warned Thai people on behalf of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha.

Webfact: ...... pre-arrival RT-PCR test scrapped.....

It would be more, much more reasonable to make the test before entering (flying to) Thailand. But the only reason is to make money here in Thailand by a special group near to the military.

What kind of BS is this.  So lets see....I don't need a pre-arrival PCR test to fly but I do when I arrive, how the hell is this going to cause the Thai people to lower their guard....This is another Aprils fool day joke...correct me if I am wrong please.

What a surprise, numbers are conveniently up with Songkran fast approaching... Govt. control freaks would love nothing more than to bring in a nationwide alcohol ban pre Songkran and the increase in +ve cases would be the justification... ????

A nationwide alcohol ban over Songkran might save many lives on the roads.  Not a bad idea!

Thanks for the local Phuket numbers

As usual. Make the people panic again before travelling in Songkhran

Getting the wheels in motion to cancel the Chuck water at people festival, good.

Any death is a tragedy but the percentage of deaths to positive cases is very low. Due to vaccination rate and current virus type I suppose.
