Ratchaburi provincial police headquarters became something of a military parade at the weekend.

The police top brass and local dignitaries were celebrating the annual crime crackdown for Songkran in the south/central Thai province.

Squad cars and what appeared to be armored carriers paraded past the podium where proud salutes were in evidence.

Then Region 7 chief Pol Lt-Gen Thanayut Wuthijarasthamrong went to inspect the 198 troops and police who will keep the public safe from crime in the Thai new year holidays this week.

Siam Rath took nine lines to list the top brass and dignitaries worthy of mention.

Riot police and armoured Humvees to keep the People safe. Ya right.

The first month I was here, 5 years ago, I was sitting in the ubiquitous street bar in Cha-am one night.

An armored humvee like this one pulled up in the street and soldiers in combat gear, with rifles, poured out of it and deployed up and down the street.

I nearly wet myself when the guy clearly in charge strode into the bar. The owner rushed up, they conferred and spoke gibberish (to me at the time). They walked over and looked at a document posted on the wall. The commandant smiled and walked out.

So all was well since the owner had paid the proper tax to be playing music in the bar.

Stupified, I stared after him wondering what the h*ll I was doing in this country.

(sometimes I still have the same doubts though)

Others here will know about the music license.

I think that armoured truck thing would look better with gold wheels.

towing perhaps the hull of an engine-les submarine

Typical Thai thinking - Appearance is more important than content. This farce was a complete waste of money. If Gilbert and Sullivan were still with us they would be writing and composing a new operetta. Though they wouldn't be able to use the song "A Policeman's Lot is not a happy one, this time.

Yes, I liked him too. I was born in 1943 and I think that my teens and a few years later were the best times British pop and the American pop was great too.
