Daily News Thai Caption: More dangerous than you think

 

Daily News continued to report anything they could after marijuana was removed from the Class 5 narcotics list last Thursday.

 

Their latest story came in the form of referring to a Facebook post by Chulalongkorn University scientist and professor Dr Jetsada Denduangboriphan. 

 

He posted about the dangers of cooking marijuana, that is to say applying heat to the plant. 

 

The Daily News article had a picture of ganja leaves giving the impression that these might cause a high. The professor even said that "THC is dangerous" as it makes you stoned.

 

His post had the heading: "Beware food with ganja that is heated - it's more dangerous than you think".

 

This had followed a show by influential TV presenter Sorayuth Suthassanachinda in which he said that a member (or members) of his production team had half a ganja cookie and had been unable to work. 

 

Dr Jetsada explained about the difference between THC and CBD.

 

He advised only consuming food that contains the leaves as the amount of THC - tetrahyrocannabidol that makes you high - is minimal. 

 

But even then you should not consume too many as the heating will put the THC in the food.

 

ASEAN NOW notes that there is a huge difference between the amount of THC in buds or flowers of the plant and that present in leaves. 

 

In the former it might be 20% or more, in the latter there would likely be only a trace amount like 0.3% along with perhaps just 0.7% CBD oil.

 

To get stoned on the leaves you would have to consume a huge amount, if it was possible at all.

 

What happened to Sorayuth's crew perhaps came from real marijuana cookies made with flowers that contain THC in abundance. 

 

In another story today a woman went on Facebook to say she had a severe allergic reaction to ganja leaves, also reported here on ASEAN NOW. 

 

With the issue now being politicized, the government caught on the hop and a general sense of confusion in Thai society it looks like "Reefer Madness" (a controversial film blamed for nonsensical attitudes to marijuana for decades) is the order of the day in Thailand.

Cannabis is the new covid then ... I wonder how many new "experts" we have to hear from on this.

According to Madam Moon, I've been eating marijuana leaves in my Thai soups and salads for years. No negative reactions and definitely no highs!

The best use for this newly found and allowed item is to teach the people what they CAN do with the plants and the leaves, extract CDB oil and other medicinal by products is the the only (legal) thing they can find a good use for those Ganja...

 

There is a high level ignorance and insanity amongst the well educated, how else would you explain the existence of so many religious societies in facilities such as Oxford/Cambridge/Yale/Harvard, etc.

I think I'll write to him and ask if in his opinion there is any truth to the rumor that alcohol gets you drunk.

You don't get to be a professor in Thailand for just any old thing you know.  It has be as a result of hundreds of other peoples/governments previous research publications before you can claim it as your own conclusion.????

Chulalongkorn University scientist and professor .... 

... he's an embarrassment to both professions.  Seems people will say anything, just to see their name in print.

My daily delivery just arrived.

On my first trip to Cambodia in 2000 you could buy a very cheap bundle of cannabis leaves at the local fresh markets to use as a seasoning in cooking.  It was very common traditional seasoning in many SEA nations, including Thailand, until the reefer madness syndrome was embraced by the governments.

 

I'll add that although it was probably illegal you could get cannabis (the smoking kind) added to your food at Happy Herbs on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh.  Normally you wouldn't get high eating the food but a friend ordered a sauce bowl of the powered herb, ate it on garlic bread, and thus consumed a much larger amount than is usually added as seasoning.  The result was a night of his antics I'll never forget, but he could never remember.

Oh rest assured there will be lots of them,  all of them spewing out the same tired old negative  rhetoric "refer madness " etc.    Another thing they will have in common is that none of them will actually have any first hand experience of smoking cannabis, so they are not really experts at all are they ?     However this doesn't matter as its the media that gives them the platform to express their ignorant outdated views and it suits them fine, because nothing gets the media in a frenzy as much as "drugs"

That is a pretty naive statement. ????

Researchers do not have to catch cancer to know that it is dangerous and can kill.

I do not need to put my hand in a fire to know that it will hurt.

I get your point, but on the other hand, could you imagine an expert marksman who had never fired a gun? Or an expert driver who had never sat in a car ?  or an expert cook who had never been in a kitchen? or an expert fisherman who has never held a rod .   Sometimes first hand experience is necessary to be considered an expert.

               The "experts" that will emerge over the coming weeks will mostly be nothing more than sensationalist scaremongers, reading from an old script, on a mission to stop people enjoying cannabis recreationally and to feed the media frenzy. 

               If just one of these so called experts offered some practical advice, for example, to somebody thinking about smoking for the first time, I might change my mind but that's not going to happen  Its going to be, as I said in my post, the same old rhetoric.  Overdose (lol) blah blah Paranoia blah blah palpitations blah blah gateway drug blah blah with the underlying message being "  don't do it"  "just say no"  (or if your English  "just say no thank you") 

                I wish i was wrong but I watched the news this morning and its already started, and have you noticed how many cannabis related threads have been started on this website by "webfact"  as opposed to threads started by members.

There is no doubt that there will be unintended consequences to wide spread marijuana use.  Pretty much every drug has side effects.   In legalizing a drug, it's the risk-benefit ratio.  Another factor is the cost of enforcing keeping it outlawed.  

 

With pot, the centuries of use show that it is generally not particularly dangerous.  Of course, some people will have adverse reactions, but it's not a substance that anyone has to take.

Probably but most people who want to use it have been using it already.

This is terrible! Unable to work because of this evil drug!!!!It is a shame on the Thai society,let me tell you!!!!

Stupid people!!!Of course you can not work if you have eaten a Ganja cookie and you are a newbie.

Reminds me of another true story,when i was younger and working in construction there was a guy who drank a half bottle of Vodka.  Guess what?  He was unable to work!!!

Amazing Thailand,there are some very bright minds here.  And some not so bright.

I suspect there will be quite a few but I don't think it will be a groundswell.   Of the older adults, I suspect most have dabbled.  I know a lot of people who dabbled in their youth with the low quality pot available.  If it's legal they may take the opportunity to 're-live' their youth.  

 

In the US, I know a lot of older people who are using it for things like helping with sleep.   A visit to a local dispensary was interesting.  I was surprised to see about 1/2 the people were well into old age, the rest seemed to be in the 30-50 range with a few 20ish people.  All of them seemed to know what they were looking for.  

 

Freedom of choice. Once again the mainstream is trying to dissuade people by playing politics. No one should be a criminal for enjoying the pleasures that THC procures. If you don't like it don't do it, but don't brand those who exercise their god given right to indulge in the plant. It is all too easy to judge things we don't understand. It is just like the stigma of tattoos. Now it is no longer taboo to have a tat. When I was a kid I was told that people who had tats were bad and, being a child, I believed it. Fortunately this narrow minded way of thinking is no longer the norm. I still don't have a tattoo but I respect those who do.  It is their choice to get one.

Understandable to have the ‘scientists’, scaremongers and fuddie duddies voice their ill-found opinion to enact their agenda onto everybody else. It’ll all blow over, but in the meantime, if you don’t like it don’t do it. Let people decide, eh! Dangerous. Lol
