I'm not tipping anymore I don't give a

The last few days being new in town for my holiday I have stupidity tipped,worked out last few days around 5k.

 

For what? No thanks,some just look at the tip and walk off ,couldn't even acknowledge it,so Fk it no more !

 

Tipped the taxi to Pattaya a few hundred baht he took it ignored me and kept talking on his phone waste of 200b never see him again.

Tipped the waitress 20b she looked at me in disgust, oh I'm sorry should I tip you more I should of asked for bringing a plate out ?

Picked up my laundry,a ladyboy serving me 190b gave her 200 b keep the change, started screeching !! 

A massage woman half way through the massage ,how much you tip me she says ?

 

For Fcks sake I said you ain't even finished the massage 

Starts telling me she has rent to pay ,100 kids 7 dogs etc etc, I ignored her 

Gave her 100 baht tip she wasn't happy no thanks 

 

So you know what yesterday I went to different places, cafes , used taxis, bars, and didn't tip once ,not once AND they thanked me ,I actually got a wai as I sat there and waited for my change !

 

Now I have a mate here in Pattaya who tips everyone because, Yeo,he feels compelled, tipped the girls at Subway last Monday when I went with him and you know what they didn't even give a rat's ass about him,no thanks nothing

Wasted 50 b he could of spent that on some thing else !

 

You know the ones who don't tip get better respect,the Russians the Indians etc 

Today I will do the same no tip 

Of course if your going back to the same place everyday I guess better to tip say 10b or 20 b but no need to go overboard just because you feel compelled.

People tip because they feel guilty 

Yesterday I got a Grab from Pattaya to jomtien 105b , the driver telling me how he came a long way to pick me up etc,he didn't actually I only waited 3 minutes, when I got to jomtien gave him 120; tried to make me feel guilty ,that's why deep down you guys feel guilty and compelled we must tip,

Several reasons for tipping

1.

You are with mates are a bar ,you feel compelled to tip in front of them.

2. You feel guilty U must leave something even they ignored you on arrival whether that be a bar or cafe or whatever but you feel compelled to do it 

3. They ask you beforehand or half way through a service eg massage or waitress ,how much U tip me ? So U feel compelled you must tell them you will tip them even if they <deleted> on you 

4. They make you feel guilty eg they have had a slow day ,no money etc 

 

Why should you have to tip the owner of a laundry when you pick up your clothes ,no tip? The transexual  asks, no tip? No tip for me ?

I live in Bangkok and have been throughout Thailand over last 10 years both tourist and off the track places.

My experience is opposite to yours.

And I soon learnt in those 5 days why ?

Look, if the service was great ,eg the waitress went out of their way for you ,or the taxi driver waited a long time for you or you are maybe going back to the same place everyday then yes tip,but doesn't have to be a lot because I soon found out if you tip a lot they don't remember.

And....don't be like my mate and tip everyone !

As for regular places 20 b is sufficient, yes absolutely I was a fool the last 5 days,I doubt expats in Pattaya Phuket etc tip everyday anyway 

 

I thinks it's tourists that tip, I can't see expats especially pensioners tipping everyday !

Tipping is annoying, i agree give minimal or nothing, leave it to the Americans they love tipping. Except massages, 50 baht+, hard work for an hour for 100+ baht.

 

It's up to the owner to pay staff a decent wage

I have had both good and bad responses to tipping here. I don't tip American style here and think people that do are idiots. Some service people are indeed very obnoxious and whining about the tip too early but not tipping them at all invites conflict, but their antics definitely don't help their cause with me. Sometimes I give a very modest tip like 20 baht to a food driver and they look shocked and do a deep wai. That actually doesn't make me feel good because it indicates most people don't tip them and I think they do deserve something. I overtip hair cutters but even though not the custom those that deal with f-rangs a lot have come to expect that, such a personal service. I don't mind indifferent responses. Leaving a modest tip doesn't make you Big Bwana.

I'm not sure Americans "love" tipping, but back there if you don't tip massively you invite being verbally assaulted. It's more like we're conditioned to tip. It is REQUIRED.

I tip where and when appropriate. I have never experienced a tip declined nor an indication that it was considered insufficient.

I don't live in a tourist area but certain places expect a tip from foreigners because it's what they have got used to, especially the 2-3 bars that the foreigners frequent in the local area. I don't understand why people tip in these places, over-priced beer and food with lousy service, even the lazy waitresses look like an advert for Michelin tyres! 

 

Now I will often say keep the change after eating out (if under B40) if I've had decent service, normally it's gratefully received. Poor service then definitely no tip.

I know a guy who is a generous 'tipper' who thinks he will get special attention next time by tipping. If it makes him feel fuzzy good inside then good for him, I'd rather save it up for a donation to the local school for the blind. A good family friend told me that excess tipping by anyone is considered a character weakness and is frowned upon (but obviously accepted!)

First: payment comes after the services, so, it is to your discretion... you are complaining about something you decided to do... though at 5k are you including payment for special services rendered as a tip?

 

Second: you have often displayed a bit of a nasty attitude in your comments here... if that attitude goes along with your tips, you will not be appreciated... 

 

You have mentioned wanting to be 80 yrs old and going with teenage girls... I am sure they will charge accordingly if you can find one. 

 

Be it in a tourist area or not - I smile easily, I can speak Thai, I understand the culture, and I tend to be a decent tipper out of a sense of sharing, not obligation... 

 

You are even angry and resentful of your own chosen actions... anger doesn't usually go over too well here... chill out and try and enjoy your vacation w/o being an angry guy..

If Bill Gates tips 200 baht, it's nothing to him.  If you can TRY to make someone happier, you should try.  If it doesn't work, don't throw everyone else under the bus.   Thai people are poorer than falang, so help them if you can.  If you aren't Bill Gates, 10 baht is better than zero.   If they look at you like a dirty, horrible person......don't go there again.  it's simple.  

 

I accidently sent via my phone 10000 instead of 100....and I said, "mai bpen rai" and smiled.

I had a job done recently by an Electrical guy, he drove 20km to me, spent 3 hrs sorting out a problem, 45minutes of that in the roof space with 36 deg heat so lord knows what it was like up in that space. When it was all finished, the electrical issiue fixed , he asked for 400 baht ! I gave him double !

I wouldnt have even come out that distance for 400 let alone what he did altogether. So yeah, that boy got a good tip ! Amazing service and VALUE in my book.

Imagine what the cost wouldve been in the West.

 

Generally out and about, no I dont tip unless its not bothering with "shrapnel" with change, and I dont regard that as a tip, more a convenience for me as I hate coins.

I had a similar experience with a couple of 3BB technicians. I called them and asked them if they could change the path of the internet fibre cable into the house. It was initially fed from a power pole to the side of the house, via an anchor point connected to a redundant "mast" from an old ISP, which I wanted to take down. They were happy to re-route the fibre and when it was complete and I asked the price, they said no charge. It would have been a big ball-ache for me, so I gave them 300 baht each. Everyone was very happy.
