Backlash! 300 Jomtien traders furious at being turfed off the sands - but authority is adamant "Clear Off!"

Siam Rath reported that 300 male and female traders descended on the Na Jomtien municipal offices yesterday furious that they were set to be banned from trading at Jomtien beach.

 

Yesterday ASEAN NOW reported a decision by five local agencies that meant the traders would have to move from Monday - or else. 

 

Yesterday the vendors who operate mobile stalls called for justice after the ban on using the beach, footpaths and road in Jomtien, part of Thailand's famed resort of Pattaya where 600 million baht has been spent on beautifying the Jomtien sands. 

 

Female trader Tharawee who sells mango and sticky rice said that right now traders were desperate to earn a living and condemned the lightning move saying many traders were in debt after investing in selling at the beach. 

 

Closing the beach to them would cause great hardship. 

 

She called on the local authority to reverse the decision saying that traders had only just started recovering from the nightmare that was the pandemic. 

 

Without the beach she feared that many would have nowhere to go and make a living. 

 

But municipality reps countered that they had received complaints about trash and traffic and crime related to battles over pitches on the beach. Other established traders in the area and residents had also continually filed complaints.

 

Also tourists had complained about access.

 

They said the law was clear and they all had to be removed to return the beach to its rightful owners - ordinary people who want to enjoy the nice surroundings. 

 

But they said they would look into finding an alternative place for them to set up and sell their wares.

 

It was then made perfectly plain by a male rep on the council that they must clear of as of the end of tomorrow.

exactly ......  so rack off and let the beach be used as intended and not as a food market.

Small step of progress, beeches are far better without all the vendors hawkers and stray dogs.

Keep them off the sand, but allow them to set up stands on the road.  That way the beach is clear, but food is accessible.

They have many mobile (side cars, scooters) food vendors parked illegally on the road, it's a nightmare, traffic hazard, very dangerous for cars, bikes and pedestrians. 

 

City Hall is fining these vendors, moving them on.

The problem with them if they are anything like the parasites up here at any attractions or swimming areas..is that they start to think they own the area. Very aggressively trying to foist stuff on you, being nasty when you wont buy off them....even trying to charge people for parking / swimming. Makes the whole experience unpleasant particularly to foreigners who aren't used to it. I love how in Thailand they give everyone a chance to make a buck without regulations and permits but generally these people are too much. Good riddance I say

they stagger around with a silver grated tray of cold prawns that look like c_rap and have been there longer than it takes to down 6 bottles of leo then they want 300 baht for 5 of them.

 

Absolute garbage in my book ....

I saw a video of a beach recently that sounded like Mexico, the people there were being aggravated by hawkers every 10-30 seconds, and I remember thinking that was once Pattaya and they had the same ignorance.....

I tried getting through that stretch of road when the vendors were in full swing. Traffic was reduced to a single lane and you know how the locals LOVE to play fair when driving. I also passed the same area yesterday morning and saw their stalls and vans at full ready to go again. This will not end well.

IMO the biggest problem with beach vendors they always take all shaded areas, and all nearby parking places. Same as beach restaurants, Not sure if its still enforced but on Koh Chang white sands, they are limited to a few tables on the beach until after sunset, then as many as you can.

The hawkers were part of the enjoyment when we used to frequent Jomtien beach but it was quite some years ago.

I would be OK, if you would restrict them to the big pavements between Jomtien Beach Road and the beach itself.

Those walking vendors trying to sell you anything and everything ever one to two minutes are a godforsaken nuisance which kept me off the beach for years. If they operate their business from the pavement in such a way that you still can walk along beach road and access the beach - fine with me. 

The other, much more mind-boggling news is the fact, that some seriously corrupt executives of the city spent 600 million on beautifying the Jomtien sands. Is it just me or do I have to ring the Marx brothers now?
