SMALL hotels in Phuket are facing dire financial problems with several having been seized by financial institutions that have put them up for sale while 200 others are in the process of being seized by the Legal Execution Department, Thansettakij newspaper said yesterday (July 13).

Around 50 small hotel owners held a protest at the parking lot behind Krungthai Bank branch at Patong beach yesterday to draw attention to their financial difficulties during a visit to the tourist island by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam and his team.

They had displayed placards on their financial woes but the demonstration ended peacefully after they were allowed to submit their petition to members of this delegation.

why don't they just double the price of a room ?

Yes and not many international tourists are coming even if tat say they are  and in general Thai people don't go to Phuket they say it's too expensive so the writing is on the wall for these small operators sad times ahead and the landlords don't care

In Thailand, like in Thailand, when one business is doing well, very soon after there will be many copy-cats and before you know it there's over supply and that is what happens in the hotel business in Thailand, thousands of everything between B&B and 5-6 stars hotels so no wonder when times are tight business is bad...

Probably due to the hyped up number of tourists entering the country that are actually construction workers !

Seems like a very well thought out solution....

Repo a hotel that fails due to no guests for two years, nor for the foreseeable future, and market it as a great investment.

Too bad foreigners can't buy a hotel, there are an awful lot of gullible ones on this forum....

Stayed on Phuket for a week in June; two different Hotels, 5 Star in Patong for 800 Baht a night, Buffet Breakfast Included and a 5 Star Beachside Resort for 1,000 a Night with Buffet Breakfast included.  Both were bargains and we had several cheap Taxi rides and a cheap Island Tour, 9am-4pm  1,000 Baht in a nice SUV.    In Rawai at the Seafood Market we ought live Asian Lobstes and had them cooked for 50 Baht each at a Restaurant Opposite.

This is not the Phuket of five years ago with everything overpriced and constant gouging; once again it's become a pleasure to go there and the only Tourists apart from a few Thai's were Arab Men and a few Indian Families.

We saw many Hotels, Restaurants and Cafe's closed and several for sale; even the Central Mall in Patong is still not open as not enough visitors for them.

You can't feel sorry for all the Traders though; as many were fleecing the Golden Goose for the last 20 years or more without ever thinking about 'what might happen tomorrow ? '.

Small hotels didn't. It was almost impossible for guesthouses and small opertors to get SHA+ approval.

And with large hotels selling rooms at a fraction of their normal rates they simply didn't get any customers.

Steady on, most who are posting on here don't want to hear anything positive!
