AN AUSTRALIAN man driving a sport utility vehicle on a Songkhla road hit a motorcycle on which three female teenage students were riding, killing two of them and seriously injuring the third girl, Amarin TV said Sept. 2.

 

This TV channel’s reporters went to the spot of the accident on Chalatat road in front of Royal Navy Shooting Range and interviewed Lt. Samphan Suwan who said officers there were the first to help the three girls who were lying unconscious on the road.

 

The two students who died were identified as Ms. Pitchapa Boonrit, 16, and Ms. Anusara Chaowanasakul, 16, both fourth grade students, while Ms. Pattraporn Srisuwan, 16, was then undergoing an operation.

Seems like the Aussie driver was at fault for turning on the road when a bike was coming .

   Really doesn't matter how fast the bike was going , he should have seen them coming and not turned out

From the position of the motorcycle and car in the below image, I can only speculate that the Australian man pulled into the north entrance of the parking lot across the street from the shooting range before exiting the south entrance of the parking lot. In order to head north, he had to cut across the southbound lanes in which the motorcycle was travelling.

When I was working in Songkla, driven this road many times, lovely area, baffles me how a fatality can happen on this road.

 

Motorbikes, so dangerous if not experienced in riding. 

These young girls, out and about, enjoying themselves, what a waste.

Accidents happens everywhere in the world, however because of a lack of education and law enforcement a lot of unneccessary accidents happen here in Thailand. 3 on a motorcycle is asking for trouble, and they don't pay attention at the traffic but are busy talking with eachother or playing cellphones. Sad for the parents, but when do people learn as it is daily news. The fact that a foreigner this time did it, should not make a difference.

I agree, mostly the fault can be traced to non-enforcement of the laws. The 3 should be alive but for knowing breaking the law doesn't mean a damn thing.

RIP to the young ladies and hope the injured one recovers, after saying that it looks like a missable  accident but lack of care and attention seems to be the problem, PLUS may I add NO MOTORBIKE is made that can legally CARRY THREE .

From the photos, the girls were traveling in the curb side lane and struck the front right side of the car. That suggests to me that the girls may have had next to no time to take evasive action. This may have been a case of the car driver watching for a break in the northbound traffic and then pulling into the southbound traffic lane before double checking that there was no oncoming southbound traffic.

 

Very sad news again and from what I can see the SUV driver is in the wrong

yet again three young girls on one bike !!!!!!!!  Parents have to take some responsibility

The problem here is these accidents keep happening, it's like putting salt in a deep open wound that will never heal unless they stitch the deep open wound up.

 

This and all previous governments, law enforcement agencies (if you can call them that), you know the ones you only see during school hours policing the traffic so kids can get from one side of the road to the other, and that policing at best is questionable, along with parents should take responsibility for the ongoing causation of these deaths and stop underaged, unlicensed kids riding, especially when not wearing helmets. 

 

While where at it, it would also help to have some kind of public transport system in place so kids don't need to get on these death traps to get from A to B.

 

Sick to the core when I read news of such young unnecessary losses in life.

 

They say from September 1 fines will go up, does that mean deaths will be reduced, I doubt it, because without enforcement, you have Jack $hit.

the "Kills" in the title is pretty harsh, but foreigners in Thailand will be punished no matter what.   100 people on a bike, falang involved....falang fault.

 

He'll be sued for everything and I couldn't imagine having this on your conscious.  

 

Knew a guy who was on a bike and a car crashed into him from behind....he was hurt and had to pay 8000 baht.   police told him he could have avoided the accident.  lol

 

Again,  "foreigner" and "kills" isn't helping us.......  falangs bad, bad, bad, bad!!!!

...i beg to disagree.  You don't have to be badgered or coerced; take the matter to court and give your evidence.  RIP

15 seems to be the age and under 110cc for bikes.

3 on a bike is still a no no.

Same as no helmets or license.

But all that will be ignored.

Just focus on the farang (again) who unfortunately was involved in this accident.

It does not really matter who was at fault.....But I do know this guy will be in jail for a very long time unless he pays out some big big big money.....

Article says family was on holiday which raises possibility that car was a rental. If so, keeping my fingers crossed that rental company has a policy which will kick in over whatever limits driver took out. Most automobile coverage back home has a territorial restriction to the home country (or maybe adjacent countries). This is a nightmare scenario in terms of potential automobile liability in Thailand, especially if you're a foreigner who may be perceived as having deep pockets. Most policies here have per person and aggregate caps on death and injury losses, which are sometimes shockingly low. Check your coverage and look into raising your liability limits would be my advice.

 

Edit: I don't think incarceration is likely in the case of simple negligence, but agree the prospect of a demand for money over and above an insurance payout is very real.

They were showing the video on Thai TV about 2 days ago now.   The driver waited for 2 motorcylces to clear and took off.  I guess he didn't see the third one.

They were also saying he drove over one of them again as he continued on.  Sort of looks like the vehicle was just sort of slowly rolling on after the impact.

 

In Oz they drop speed limits from 60-50-40 to 30 and even 10 as its proven that speed kills, quite literally. Huge reduction in death just from a lower speed. Couple potential speed with 3 x 45kg girls which even exceeds the recommended weight limit of a brand new click and its a recipe for disaster.

RIP to everyone the family must be devastated. As for the aussie guy, you can drive like a d*&k in oz and 99% the other person is aware, but 2 bad decisions at once theres no hope

I have been riding 20 years, scooters, 250s, 600s etc. Even me with 80kg and experience having a 40kg pillion severly limits my movements. With 3 girls on a woeful scooter there is essentially no steering at all except at super low speeds. This will continue to happen until these bikes a confiscated and the adults, cops and everyone who let them do this for as long as they did all share accountability

Have you seen the video, seems like the driver pulled out into their path. Probably wouldn't have been any different whoever was riding the bike.

So many comments about three on the motorcycle . The driver of the suv pulled directly in front of the oncoming motorcycle . The girls had no chance to avoid the accident . Therefore the driver of the suv is 100 percent at fault . 

I always go out to the right when approaching a car waiting to go out from a side road just to be sure i do not end up like these unfortunate girls .

I think if you looked up "victim blaming" in the dictionary, it would reference this thread.

Have a look at the clips, the guy caused the accident !!!!

Any bike/rider, no mater what the riders skills, license, helmet etc, would probably be dead or seriously injured.
