Loved this comment…. Not for the political implication, but for the ascension beyond in using the overtly obvious in such unavoidably timely fashion and then doing so, so simply with a followed up RIP

  • She truly understood the  meaning of duty and quietly played that role throughout our lives, earning our love and respect consequently. I can't imagine the UK without her

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch whose rule spanned seven decades, died on Thursday at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, on the death of her father, King George VI. She oversaw the last throes of the British empire, weathered global upheaval and domestic scandal, and dramatically modernized the monarchy.

She died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after doctors said they had become concerned about her health on Thursday.

Elizabeth ruled over the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, and became one of the most recognizable women ever to have lived. Her son, Charles, immediately became King upon her death.

Prince Harry is traveling to Scotland from London, UK news agency says

From CNN's Lauren Kent

Prince Harry is traveling to Balmoral from London, according to the UK’s PA Media news agency.

The Duke of Sussex was originally scheduled to attend the WellChild Awards in London on Thursday, which celebrates the inspirational qualities of seriously ill children and young people in the United Kingdom.

Harry canceled an appearance at the charity awards ceremony in London to fly to Scotland in the wake of fellow royals who have also travelled to Aberdeenshire, PA reported.

He is on his way to Balmoral separately from other royals but has been in coordination with other family members' plans, a spokesperson for the Sussexes told CNN earlier on Thursday.

Very sad day--lot of tears around the world today.

She was the only person that everyone knew, when someone referred to the "Queen" (quite an achievement). Every other monarch (except in their own countries) had to have a country designation after Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

Senior royals had gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

Obituary: Queen Elizabeth II

The long reign of Queen Elizabeth II was marked by her strong sense of duty and her determination to dedicate her life to her throne and to her people.

She became for many the one constant point in a rapidly changing world as British influence declined, society changed beyond recognition and the role of the monarchy itself came into question.

Her success in maintaining the monarchy through such turbulent times was even more remarkable given that, at the time of her birth, no-one could have foreseen that the throne would be her destiny.

No doubt the positive comments will by far outweigh the inevitable bitter and twisted comments about royalty,…. to those edging a negative narrative I say hold it.. someone’s great granny just died….

I’m not a royalist, but I am a human and I recognise it when a good un has passed.

RIP Queen Liz, Mum, granny, great granny…    and much much more to uncountable others…

Very sad news at the passing of Her Majesty.

She was such a lovely person that inspired us all in some small way throughout the years,  whether it be from her regular Christmas day speech or the 2020 Covid-19 broadcast or any other announcement she presented.

The Queen - Elizabeth II will always be remembered as the one who kept unity when things got tough, the one who praised when deserved, the one who truly worked hard and was loved by all.

RIP Her Majesty the Queen ....    and thank you kindly for the memorable years you gave to us all.

Long live the King.

Poor Charles, waited all his life for this, and now he may very well abdicate in favour of William. I guess we'll have to see if he actually has the ceremony or not.

It would cost a lot of money for him to become king ( bank notes, stationary etc ) and would likely be only a few years.

William is the better choice, and he's popular as well, but I always doubted it was going to change as long as she was alive.
