Is it okay to be shirtless ( barechested) for a man doing exercise in a park?

Many times you'll here of complaints made by That's or government officials more likely that a farang was got smooching on the beach, falang girls wearing revealing bikinis, etc.

The only times that I wear longs is at my visa extension renewal and funerals or weddings, otherwise I always wear shorts.

 

Around the house I don't wear a shirt. If I go off site then I wear a shirt.

Most Thais that do are working or near their house....

It's considered bad form, just as it is everywhere else....

Twice I been in a vehicle with Thais when they've seen a farang man shirtless walking on the road.....Each time the Thais just burst out laughing....The hairy bodies were found to be hilarious....

It's pretty tasteless & tacky to walk around like that....

It's not a societal norm here....

This. Mostly an attempt by idiots to get attention. Just makes farang look bad and increases negative feelings about them among Thais. A couple of weeks ago I saw one of the shirtless idiots circle a block twice in order to be sure his tattoos were appreciated.

 

If Thais do it, they're probably low class. But if Thais will accept a behavior from other Thais, that doesn't mean they will from farang as well. Oh, life ain't fair.

 

Better, as a foreigner in their country (a fact of which Thais are always conscious), uphold a respectable standard in public as you would at home. Makes life easier for us all.

 

When I leave my building and walk down to the beach, I always wear a singlet with shorts. I take it off only when I get to the beach, and I put it right back on just before I leave. Around town here in Pattaya I'll always wear a T-shirt or golf shirt.

Been a regular at our local fitness park 11 years; running track, badminton, outdoor exercise/gym equipment, basketball, futsal, takraw, tai chi, aerobics, indoor gym . . . all definitely 'shirt-on'.

Actually, at the age of 63, jogging 4 km every morning and weighing 64 Kg, my body is in pretty good shape ????  No bulging muscles, but no man boobs and no beer gut either.  Regardless, I keep my shirt on (a collared shirt of course...)

Going topless in Thailand was de rigeur for both(?) sexes up until the thirties, if I recall correctly. The reigning monarch issued a decree declaring that all women should cover their naked chests but no mention of the men - killjoy!

Simon, unless you're a very short guy, I think you're drastically underweight? At 5' 9", I should supposedly be about 78-85kgs (I wish!)

I can't imagine how thin 64kgs must look.

I guess it depends on location. In my village men go shirtless all the time. I do sometimes but although I am fairly good shape and a bit tanned, my whiteness makes me stand out and I feel a bit self conscious. None here would go to another village shirtless, I am sure. I read somewhere that it is against the law the drive a car shirtless in Thailand.

I've seen people run on a track shirtless, and I get it.  Somehow a track gets a pass from me.

 

In a park you are blinding the animals with a 1970 back tat that droops with your aging skin.

 

If fit, then you are screaming for attention like a little baby.

Walking down Silom would be a bit weird.  Would you do that in a business district in your home country ... I think not.

 

Maybe when I was under 30 and quite fit, and not a fur ball yet ... ????

 

I don't button my shirts here, locally, unless going into a business, but, I am living rural and it's a surfside town.  So quite 'acceptable', as many Thais do the same or even shirtless themselves.

Any houses for sale in your village? I'm in fairly good shape and tanned, seems like  it's the' go to place,' I'll wear a shirt when I drive though!????????????

In Thai culture, it is considered impolite.  You would probably get a few looks and a policeman might ask you to cover up.
