Why do Thai people giggle when I tell them I'm about to go visit Isaan ?

It would be better to ask the person as to why they giggled , how would you expect other people to know why a certain person giggled about something ?

They are simple people! Don't let it worry you!

Issan has a reputation for being undeveloped and primitive , rather like a tourist going to the USA and telling the taxi driver " I am going to the Mid West and staying in a trailer park for two weeks

  • Guess you've never been to Issan, KK and Korat of some of the biggest cities in TH.

Not only a reputation, a fact in IMHO. Corrupt, lazy and uneducated. Whenever I go to Bangkok I feel like I am back to the normal world.

why you tell s.b. you don't know about your travel plans?

Perhaps they have developed gigglitis which I heard from the most reliable source's possible Tucker Carlson and Dr Joe Rogan, is a lasting side effect of covid 19 and comes about because people refused to take horse dewormer to cure the original condition hahaha ????

Let's see. You said in your big long farang accent. I'm going to Hat Yai, Malaysia and Isaan. He probably thought you were buying a large "HAT" in Malaysia. By the time you got to the word Isaan he was giggling.

So what's wrong with being 'Corrupt, lazy and uneducated'?

Sure there is corruption, Don't know many places where there is not any. But for the farang it's mostly their own family.

Lazy? Would you want to work in the hot sun after a meal of snails washed down with a bottle of Lao Khow?

Some are uneducated. But they know how to look after buffaloes.

Hi. FYI. As far as we all know Isaan is NOT a province of Thailand.

They think you are going to look for a wife.

IME Isaan women have the reputation of being hard workers. The few I have met tend to confirm that observation.

I know one who is partnered with a Canadian who is Olympic class for laziness. It's a perfect match, she can't sit still for 5 minutes without wanting to work on something. He says it makes him tired just watching her.

You can find them in CM too. At the risk of generalizing, I'd say most women here seem to work harder than most men.

Lol ..

Issan residents are lazy and uneducated? Ready to rip you off at any moment; corrupt, primitive?

All those educated westerners got their lessons  from those YouTube videos that start “When I go to the village ..” go on to talk about  “.. a farm girl” and end with “.. i’m happy to be home .. all that sitting on the floor..”

Every time I tell a Thai person I'm planning to go visit a couple of cities in Isaan, they start to giggle.

Why do they do that?

They start to imagine all the strange stuff you will eat unknowingly...

Kinda.

are Issan the Aborigines of Thailand?

Some have very primitive facial feature.

A great deal of sweeping generalizations regarding Isaarn today on this board.

It is true many of the older ones are uneducated, stuck in their ways but that most certainly doesn't apply to all.

My niece is now at Khonkaen university, My local shopkeeper is from Bangkok but his wife is from Ubon, their three children are going through university, the eldest has now finished and works in Roi Et, and I could go on and on.

Not only is Isaarn the ' rice basket ' of the nation but without Isaarn labour, Bangkok would never have been built in the first place.

Regards a comment by a member (registers himself on TVF as living in Patong) about corruption, that title belongs to the ' seat of power ' Bangkok', riddled with it. The entire place is fuelled by Greed. I sure as hell don't think Phuket is far behind.

The Police up here are not perfect, as all on this board know it's a nationwide problem, but I would rather be dealing with the lot up here as opposed to Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok or Samui, in the event of a mishap.

The pace of life is slow, I agree and it can get on my nerves, but I feel a lot happier here than I did in Pattaya. It just takes some getting used to. I am fortunate enough to be able to live where I wish, and I choose up here. I am one hour from Bangkok by plane if I need to go there. and from Bangkok, 1 hour to Cambodia or Vietnam.

Why are you talking to taxi drivers about your plans?

Don't get into personal talk with service personnel, it lowers your social standing. They could be snickering because of that.

Taxi drivers like doing this to newbies, getting into personal discussions in the cab and putting themselves on equal footing with you.

Watch a Thai businessman take a cab ride. There is no chit chat. The driver does his job and the passenger relaxes in the back. Everything goes quietly and smoothly. The social structure that guides Thai society works.

I remember the couple who sold me the condo, he was German, she was from Isaan with the classic dark skin. Beautiful face. He presumably missed out on the racial purity indoctrination of the Nazi era.

She handled all the paperwork for the transfer, I think she was a qualified lawyer. I'm somewhat OCD myself, but the level of organization she brought to having everything in the right place at the right moment in the land office was awesome.

Jesus wept, you're worried about social standing? Here's a newsflash - farangs have none. That is why Thais call us farangs.

The only standing foreigners have here is based on the size of one's wallet, nothing else. Although I suppose someone who speaks perfect Thai might get a bit more respect.

Take a look at how Thais treat their elderly, then compare it with how elderly foreigners are treated.

I've never been in the back of a taxi with a Thai business man, fortunately.
