"Oh there's 3 million baht in the brown envelope" - how did that get there!

Thai Rath reported on the arrest of what police say is a corrupt, bribe taking head of incoming finance at Bangkok's downtown Ratchathewi district office.

 

Arrested in a hotel car park after a sting there was 57 year old Pramuan Saengkaewsri. He had 3.2 million baht in an envelope.

He claimed he didn't know there was money in the envelope.

 

"I thought it was documents", he offered a tad feebly.

 

He has been charged with taking bribes as a state official and denies this.

Pol Maj-Gen Jaroonkiat Pankaew of the Anti-Corruption and Misedemeanor Suppression Division of the RTP said that Pramuan had abused his position and turned to the dark side.

 

He had been taking money from people in the real estate sector.

 

In the case that got him busted, Pramuan approached a company in the sector and said that they owed 40 million baht in land taxes.

He, however, could settle the tax bill for them for a payment of 3 million baht. Various negotiations saw the price go to 3.5 then down to 3.2 million baht.

 

This figure was agreed with the company but they had other ideas in mind for the corrupt official.

 

They went to the police and set up a sting that involved the handing over of the money in the Thung Phraya area hotel and the suspect's subsequent arrest outside.

Good to see a clamp down on this. Did the company actually owe any taxes or not? Would expect them to have been aware if they owed 40 million Baht.

Deny. That's what my Thai ex-wife did for 5 years after robbing my Bangkok condo of my agreed posessions, furnishings, TV etc. after divorce. She even lied in denial to her UK lawyers and repeatedly denied. What she did not know, was that I had security log books and image evidence, along with a statement from the condo juristic manager that staff had helped her load her niece's vehicle with TV etc. On production of the evidence, she dropped her claim against me for withheld final settlement funds immediately!

It had to be the mother of all envelops to contain 3 million plus baht and to think it was 'document', anyway, this guy will re think many times in his how he could have done differently and get busted like an amateur.

I am willing to bet his creep will never see the inside of a prison cell. Probably won't even lose his job.

I like the way the Chinese deal with official corruption......death sentence and maybe reuse of organs to pay society back for his filthy corruption and useless life.

 

Only in Thailand could anyone offer such an explanation and expect to get away with corruption amounting to $100000. It is taking the pi$$.

This is just a teeny tiny little tip of the iceberg that we’re getting to see, with all those busts as of late. The whole system is as corrupt as corrupt can get, it really amazes me how a country can even still function like that. Imagine what a powerhouse of an economy Thailand could be if everything was on the up and up and everyone (more or less) played by the rules. Now it’s mostly a small and vastly wealthy elite that profits from this corrupt system, while the majority of Thai people struggle to get by.

Notice how many of these cases we are seeing all of a sudden, just prior to the election. As if we are being asked to believe ChaCha and the cops are sincere about fighting corruption.

You seem to lack a basic understanding of corruption in Thailand. ALL countries have corruption in one form or another but Thailand is almost unique in the way that corruption from top to bottom permeates every aspect of daily life.

60 % of the population surveyed actually approve of corruption as they consider it oil's the wheels of government and business. Many people don't even regard it as corruption as its roots are so embedded deep in Thai history and culture.

Many foreigners living in Thailand seem totally oblivious of the corruption that daily occurs around them.

It's worth considering if this sort of thing could happen in the same way in your home country. It seems the officer was so confident his operation was acceptable that money was just keft lying around in his office .... at least he knew his colleagues were trustworthy enough  not to  steal  it ....

But that’s how the system has worked for a long time, and will very probably continue to work for a long time. The people doing it know they can do it with impunity, as long as they spread the money around and send a sizeable chunk of it to those higher up the chain. So there’s really no reason for them to be afraid or overly careful, because they know they’re getting away with it.

Best not to panic and admit because they use it against you in the courts. If you want a good result, let your lawyer defend you in court.

 

Judges hand out punishment, not cops. Dont forget that if you ever get caught in a sticky situation Stoner. "Not my weed. I dont even smoke the stuff"
