Ukrainian Woman Arrested After Spray Painting Famous Viewpoint in Phuket

Featured Replies

Her message is irrelevant with regard to law.

Her offense is defacing private/public property. She could have written "long live Putin" and still commit an offense (likely civil). Freedom of speech here does not apply.

That said, the ICC did launch an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity carried out in Ukraine by Russia, and issued arrest warrants against Putin and another Russian Federation official related to unlawful deportation of Ukrainian population, etc. No amount of public support or disagreement will alter either action.

PS: Thailand has non-member status with ICC.

Her anger got the better of her but she's right, Russia is a terrorist state

  • How can you unintentionally buy spray paint and then graffiti in multiple places but not mean too. I say make her physically clean and remove it all and then charge her, fine her and blacklist her. Ab

and some time in a Thai jail to remind her that it's not polite to vandalise other country's property for her own politics.   If she did that in Singapore likely get the cane.

This is not a one-off incident. It was at various locations and on various different dates spread over at least a 2 month period.

Just waiting for the first brawls or worse.

I'm involved in the tennis world, and there is tension in the locker rooms too. Only a matter of time.

Hmmm… deport her back to Ukraine,  I’m sure they will deal with her vandalism. Probably no need to ban her either, as I  wouldnt think she will be doing any more travelling ?

Actually Ukrainians are free to say whatever they want about Russians here and Russians are free to say whatever they want about Ukrainians here as well.  However - graffiti is vandalism and is extremely disapproved of especially on Thailand's cultural and tourist sites.

So Thailand isn't impeding "freedom of speech" but they are enforcing their laws against vandalism - as the should.  That a huge difference.

Which has what significance to the crime of vandalism in Thailand?  ????
None that I can see.  Please don't drag this off-topic kids.
Like I said - leave the Geo-politics and enjoy a vacation or your expat life in Thailand.

Who remembers that Scouser in Chiang Mai? Spray painting that wall, didn't he get some jail?

The pair got 100,000 THB fines and were released with the admonishment not to break the law or else go to jail for 10 years.
The voluntarily left.  Good idea.

It could be that she is actually a Russian supporter, from the Ethnic Russian part of Ukraine. The idea being to alienate supporters of Ukraine by showing that Ukrainians are natural vandals and insulting the host country. I wonder why she is here in the first place. I thought that no Ukrainian under 60 was allowed out of the country. Russians are masters of deceit and disinformation and are very good at campaigns to discredit opponents. No loyal Ukrainian would bring their country into disrepute in such a manner

Give her a medal a cold beer and a nice meal????

Of all the graffiti I have read this seems to be in the field of the most apt and laudable.

She has a right to be angry  people have invaded her country and mean to destroy her and her countrymen, her frustrations were released through graffiti , harmless paint that is not directed at the king so no harm done, she will return on the 10th knowing she did her bit.

Like other posters have said, if we all just start 'releasing our frustrations though graffiti" it would be anarchy and this country's cultural and tourist sites would be a fiasco defaced with "harmless paint" in order to make a point - "so no harm done."  Sorry - it's a crime because Thais see it as harming the cultural institutions.

Graffiti is vandalism and vandalism is a crime with judicial consequences.
This isn't LA, Chicago, or New York and I think the Thais want their country graffiti-free regardless of the message.  It's not the message!
It's the act (and an act of complete disrespect to Thailand) which is a crime.

This is one of the first times I'm seeing AN members of the expat community advocating for the commission of a crime as long as the message is "correct" in their own minds.  That's sad and shows how far society has fallen in the last couple of decades.

Destroy? Perhaps you mean deface? The rocks and concrete she painted are still there you know.

Yes they are there but unless they can be cleaned completely with damaging them then pick your word, it's all the same thing. Sounds as if you aren't opposed to what she did?

That is what the woman is protesting about .

Russia is doing more than painting park benches in the Ukraine .

It doesn't matter what she's protesting she has no right to deface, destroy or damage property of other people\country. If she did this to your car or home guess that's OK with you from the sounds of your comment

I bet if she did this on your car and your home you wouldn't be so pleased and supportive. There's no excuse for her actions and your comment shows your charactrer

OK to remind us you have zero scruples about damaging other people's property.   You just trilling now

The park bench is not damaged at all.

The woman has made a peaceful protest

To me it looks like she getting away with this lightly,

Is it possible to get the contact details of this woman.  I have three properties and three deep sea boats.  I would be more than happy for her to paint this slogan on the front wall of all of my properties and across the stern of each of my boats.

Hardly a peaceful protest when you damage property of others. And it wasn't just a park bench that she painted.

Jeez … another person that wants to protest in another country and deface public structures.what was this woman thinking . That’s right she didn’t mean to do it and she won’t do it again .Sorry just won’t cut it

Imagine what any country would look like if we all just wanted to express our views by spray painting every available wall space.

It would look like the UK.

It’s probably a rare opportunity for any Russian tourists in the area to read the truth of what is going on in Ukraine. Maybe not a bad thing.

Some serious DQs here. A fine perhaps to cover the cost of removal and apology and move on.  So many vitriolic people inhabiting the forum these days, wanting people’s lives destroyed over a relatively minor issue.

I couldn't agree more and let me remind the "vitriolic people" or heartless morons in my book that comments such as:

'Throw her in jail and throw away the key'

'lock her up'

'send her to the monkeyhouse'

'send her back to Bachmud' (Bakhmut)

'absolute scum'

........ seem to be way over the top considering the gravity of the crime committed in this case.

Is there an English speaking/reading nation that is pro-Russia and visits Phuket area?  I don't think so , so she was preaching to the choir in my opinion.
