Thaksin says he will return to Thailand in July, despite potential consequences

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is determined to return to Thailand in July, after about 17 years of living in exile, regardless of the risk that he will be forced to serve the 10-year prison term from which he fled.

His birthday is on July 26th.

In a recent interview, recorded in Singapore, Thaksin reiterated his plan to return to Thailand, adding “I have said before and have reconfirmed that. I am waiting for Ung Ing (Paetongtarn, his daughter) to set the date, the timing.”

He said that he wants to be able to care for his seven grandchildren, to relieve the burden on their parents, so they can focus on work.

According to extracts from the interview, when asked whether he may become prime minister again, Thaksin claimed that he is too old to play politics, adding “It is beyond my era. This is the era of the new generation, not an era of the old people.

We old people can offer advice to, but not force (the new generation) because we cannot catch up with them. We old people may understand the children, but it is like the understanding of English by people who learned English in Thailand, who are no match for those who grew up abroad and who are more proficient in the language.”

I don't know what is end game is. But his constant attitude is that he hates it to be ignored. Now people talk about Move Forward and not about him. That is obviously something he can't accept.

Let's destabalise the political situation even further. Makes me wonder what his end game is. Say what you will but he's no fool in the game of politics.

Sweep stakes....

How long before he’s arrested and red-shirts protest and blockade major cities...

Then the military have to step in with another Coup because the existing government are unable to maintain law and order ???

I give it 5 months.

I disagree. Why would he plan this? Why would he plan for another coup? What will he gain?

So what does he do? Go to the press with some crazy statement which he will know they will pick up. And he has another 15 minutes of fame.

It must be sad to be so desperate for attention.

Your personal opinion. Fair enough. My opinion is maybe there's more to it. Not sure. Seems like pot stiring to me though.

Read again... I haven’t suggested he’s planning for another Coup...    I have suggested thats the potential outcome if he tries to return...

If I was super rich like him I would forget Thailand. Go enjoy a more sophisticated region.

But imagine if you would love that people recognize you everywhere. And that some of them treat you like the messiah. And you know you just deserve to be treated like that. He will get that only in Thailand.

In all those other countries he can probably walk into any 7/11 and they tell him to go to the end of the line. So sad for someone who just knows how important he is.

Thaksin Reaffirms Next Month’s Homecoming Plan
By Thai Newsroom Reporters

SELF-EXILED, DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra has reconfirmed he is definitely coming back home next month, the date of which is yet to be disclosed.

In talk with famed TV host Khachapa “Moddam” Tancharoen in Singapore recently, Thaksin has repeated his earlier vow to return home after 17 years of globetrotting and living in self-exile abroad though he might possibly end up in jail upon his planned homecoming next month.

The deposed prime minister who has been earlier sentenced in absentia by court to a combined 10-year prison under separate counts of misconduct perpetrated during his premiership nearly two decades ago said he is already too old to be politically involved any longer and that he would rather leave the country’s political future to new generations.

The operative word here is 'potential' consequences, not, despite the consequences.....He is waiting for his daughter to set the date, so the soup is already being stirred. He wont be arrested, maybe a commission will be set up to 'look into things', that will only concern his lawyers and the press before the case dies a natural death of familiarity and disinterest.

Pheu Thai are in the coalition... with the 2nd highest numbers and with a lot of clout.

Why would he come back to destabalise that?

Your post makes no sense.

You seem to ignore the fact that he has been talking about his return well before the election and before "people talk about MF". 15 minutes of fame seem to last many many years...

Personally, I might welcome him back.

As such an event will add fetid fodder to the gossip and speculation chambers...

Popcorn at the ready.

It is all lies... He claims that even if he goes to prison... How can he take care of his grandchildren in jail?? and too old for politics.. What is he doing everyday for years already??

If he loves Thailand so much he stays away, Go live in Cambodia or Laos or Singapore but let Thailand first recover of the coups and mismanagement of the last decades, instead of bringing unrest again

Is there a statute of limitations on his crime against the Thai people?

I seem to recall that his passport was taken away and he travels on passports of other countries, so, on arrival if allowed in he would only be given a tourist visa valid for a short stay, plus he may require an entry visa which might have to be issused from an embassy. and as a person on the run, should not be issused. so, he could be reused entry. but, if he arrives he should be arrested and taken directly to prison. still he Best option would be to arrange for his grandchildren to join him in another country. Interesting to see what will happen. Now,where is Red bull gentleman, funny nobody knows where he is? Perhaps the government should offer a large reward for him, we welcome his return to serve time too.

Wrong, as a Thai citizen he allowed in at anytime.

Would be interesting to know his / PTs / the reds real game plan on this.

What are ther really trying to achieve?

And what will it do to disrupt an ongoing MF led gov't?

There’s another person on TV who also hates to be ignored on the same subject. However, unlike Thaksin, this person believes he has some knowledge on the topic and history whereas in reality, he is as naive as the average brick.

His crime was being too popular and affecting the income of the military.

just like the numerous PM’s overthrown before him.

Did the crime, will he, can he do the time??? ????

It is not uncommon for those who find themselves in exile for many years have a yearning to return home to their fatherland i don’t think this guy is any different and has now decided that the time to return is now let’s face it had he not fled he would of served his sentence and been a free man
