A 78 year old Thai monk from Rat Samakkhi Temple in Chon Buri urged police to track down a woman who swindled over 800,000 baht from him. The monk added that he will forgive her and stop the legal process if she presents herself to the police and take responsibility for her actions.

The community leader, Yotsadhammo Puangsisang, accompanied the monk to the Plutaluang Police Station to file a complaint against the scammer on July 29. However, the case had not developed, so Yotsadhammo reached out to Channel 3 to spread his story and pressured the suspect.

Yotsadhammo revealed to the media that the woman first asked for money from him in April last year. She made the monk feel sorry for her by saying she had been made bankrupt and lost everything in her life.

The woman asked for money so she could travel back home to the central province of Chantaburi but did not have enough money to fill up her car with fuel. Yotsadhammo decided to support her.

Was that his retirement fund?

Wow.  An average 50,000 baht per month for 16 months!

A strange situation for sure.

A fund for a rainy day... it poured.

Boy that was some expensive fuel.

So he gave her 800,000 baht to fill up her petrol tank, doing good deeds is one thing but being gullible to this extent is a crime.

Woman scamming Monk instead of Monk doing the scamming. This sounds like Karma to me.

It says that he agreed to "support her" and the whole thing lasted more than a year, so it sounds like he agreed to effectively pay her a wage. Whether he simply did that out of the kindness of his heart or if he was getting something out of it is another question.

Exactly, a few extras and happy endings, naughty boy. ????

Silly me, here's me thinking that Buddhist monks were not supposed to have cash.

He must have sold a lot of amulets. (Note the police got nowhere so he appealed to the media.)

Full story; He has known her for 20yrs and gave her his monthly pension.

So how did he get cashed up? The cops need to check his money trail.

Probably wasn't his money but temple funds, if so he was misusing money that wasn't his. A naughty saffron robed philanthropist. I think he was getting his fair share which is why he wont press charges.

Thai Buddhism the name of the game is cash. There's a reason the most active place for lottery ticket sales is in the temple car park and the most wished request is to get rich themselves.  Give money, pray for money, take a ticket...

Fundamental flawed adoption of Buddhism, but not so bad when you compare it to any interpretation of Islam or sacrifice the kids to Father Fiddler of Christianity

Questions will be asked about where he got the money. I suspect he has more. And why would she ask for 800,000 in order just to get home?

They may have a relationship.

This is a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes. The Monk and the Old Friend.

That may be the rule but does not apply to Thai monks  In fact not many rules seem to apply to them!

How does a monk get 800,000 baht? They dont work.

The monk is a foreigner

I'm not sure what the scam was. The woman asked for money. The monk gave her money.

Maybe the woman lied about what the money would be used for.

Or about her marital status.

The real crime is: how the F does a monk have more cash in the bank than me? Lol ????

We hear a lot about "poor Thais" from the white knights - hell I even subscribed to that philosophy when fist came here - but it's all BS.

For a 78 year old Thai monk to have 800,000 baht in his pocket, seems to me to be a little suspicious.

It's possible. It could also be a load of nonsense too.....
