A British man recounted an unsettling encounter with some racist Russians in Phuket, southern Thailand. His unfortunate experience has led him to declare that he will never return to the island.

 

The British man, who shared his story on the Reddit platform under the username Wanderlust3r0, started his narrative by stating he is a black British man with a Thai wife.

 

“I have been coming to Thailand for the last ten years and this is the first time I have experienced racism, not from my Thais but from Russians in Phuket.”

The British man explained that Phuket is his wife’s home province. He met his wife in 2016 and visited her from time to time until February 2020, when she moved to live with him in the UK. Over these years, he had never experienced racial discrimination in Phuket until a visit this year.

The British man said he and his wife arrived in Phuket in mid-September and stayed near Karon and Kata beaches. He felt discriminated against on several occasions when using the services of various restaurants and later discovered that the discrimination was not from locals but from Russians who now own many businesses in the province.

So go elsewhere no Russians

Easy to say don't go there but his wife's  family live there 

Any way he has said he wont go back ????

More reason for the rest of us  not to go there 

I prefer other places in Thailand ????

Not much compared to murder

From the article:

" a small restaurant and bar on the beach where all the items on the menu were in Russian. He explained that he turned on his favourite music playlist on the restaurant’s stereo ........... a bar and restaurant manager turned off his playlist after a group of Russians arrived. The manager then gave all control over the songs to the Russians. The music was switched to Russian songs, prompting the man to ask the Russian group to switch back to his playlist."

 

Then it started. Should have gone to another restaurant instead of trying to force his ways on other people.

So is it a shocking encounter as the title suggests, or an unsettling encounter as explained in the first paragraph?

Without substantiated claims or even any examples, the who story appears a bit clickbaity to me. Is The Thaiger short on proper stories?

And before the mods jump on me, I am having  a dig at the Thaiger not at AN.

Actual racism/prejudice/indifference that humans tend to have has been around since the beginning of human evolution. No one single type of indifference of prejudice is any worse than another. Using race to create a case of a variable injustice is racism in of itself, it the use of race to express one’s own prejudicial indifference…waiting and seeking an opportunistic event of something that may or may not have occurred.

Can't you read?

He specifically stated that he was not generalising and he did specify the words that were used that confirm the racist verbal attack of the group involved.

Apart from the Russians, Phuket people are know by other Thai's as being Jai Dam, in my experience of living here a long time Thai's are racist's towards black people,

He was probably expecting everyone to bend over backwards for him and throw a party in the name of diversity and inclusion - for fear of being called a Racist, as he is used to in Britain.

He shouldn't keep pushing his music to Russian people in a Russian restaurant when the manager already decided he had his playing time.

Quite intriguing in Thailand, as we often see aged farangs (with Thai wives). These farangs often can be ridiculous racists and make sultry comments against other foreigners. Some sort of a way to ease their own complex for being married to a Thai maybe.

The Guy went into Russian owned restaurant where the menu was only in Russian and he made a request to have his choice of music played and that the group of Russian stop playing their choice of music and listen to his choice of music .

You need to read the whole story , rather than just reading the headlines , to understand the story 

It seems countries like Russia, Poland, Hungary are holding the fort against migrants so not too surprising some Russians are racist

I guess his choice in music was very bad.
