Police chief confirms 2 dead with reports of at least one more fatality in Bangkok mass shooting

Attacker appeared to be mentally disturbed when apprehended. He repeatedly told police ‘he’s over there’ as he was handcuffed and later interrogated by officers seeking a coherent explanation for the atrocity which has led to calls for a review of security by the PM, Srettha Thavisin who visited the scene.

Thailand’s National Police Chief on Tuesday evening at 7.55 pm confirmed two deaths in the mass shooting perpetrated by a mentally ill 14-year-old including a 34-year-old Chinese woman, a tourist to Thailand and a national from Myanmar.

The news comes with persistent reports of a third fatality but with relief among police and security experts that regular drills and training at the popular Siam Paragon Shopping Centre in the capital and an effective response from local police officers, probably saved lives. Police are probing the mental health disorder suffered by the 14-year-old suspect who was taken to Pathum Wan Police Station and who appeared to believe he was being stalked.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Police Chief General Torsak Sukwimol both were at the scene at the Siam Paragon Shopping Centre on Tuesday evening in the aftermath of a mass shooting carried out by a 14-year-old gunman who has not yet been named, but who police say suffers from mental illness and has been treated psychiatrically at the Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok.

14-year-old boy murdered Chinese tourist in a terror attack on Bangkok’s Siam Paragon Centre
by News Desk

Police chief at 7.50 pm confirms two deaths from the attack. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited Siam Paragon as a series of disturbing questions arose over Tuesday’s shooting. The latest news is that the 14-year-old boy may have a mental health issue linked to gaming and was showing off the 9mm Glock handgun to friends online. The Prime Minister has initially indicated that security may have to be reviewed for tourists in the kingdom with several large public holidays and festivals approaching.

There was a mass shooting in Bangkok on Tuesday perpetrated by a 14-year-old boy dressed in military gear who murdered a Chinese tourist and wounded two using a Glock handgun. Panic broke out at the upmarket Siam Paragon Shopping Centre on Rama 1 after 4.20 pm and lasted approximately 50 minutes until a police response led to the arrest of the lone perpetrator. Reports suggest that up to three people may have been killed with four injured but in a briefing, after the incident ended, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin highlighted only one fatality with the police chief later raising this to two dead.

Thai police at Pathum Wan Police Station in Bangkok detained a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday who was responsible for a terror attack at the city’s upmarket Siam Paragon Shopping Centre on Rama 1 in the heart of the Thai capital.

Yeah, but it was random.

It's not as if Chinese are being targeted for being Chinese.

Wrong place, wrong time, can happen anywhere to anyone.

We know that, but I have a feeling the Chinese press won't be quite so 'restrained' in their reporting. I guess we'll find out in the next day or two.

Thailand already has strict gun control laws. It's not easy to buy one legally. However there are many illegal guns floating around. It's not hard to find one.

According to the report it was a reengineered prop gun.

I think that was the point. Laws only hinder law abiding people. Criminals are going to break the law regardless. Most places have laws not to kill, but people still do it. The only difference is the manner in which they choose to do it. Outlaw guns and those intent to kill will use knives, hammers, cars, or whatever else they can get their hands on.

Not going to help a bit with the government efforts to bring more Chinese tourist by cancelling the need for visa, and now this shooting that will ruin everything...

The incident has to do with Thailand.  And a mentality disturbed juvenile.  May the injured recover.  And the deceased RIP.
Not issues of any other country.
Some here as usual will find excuses to bash a Western country.  Usually because they are bitter because they couldn’t make it there.  And come to Thailand.  .

It's not hard at all. There's a whole scene on Twitter with lots of pages selling guns and pen pistols very openly and very cheap.

Most of my staff had guns when I used to work in phuket.

They were cooks.

So it was a young nutter on the loose,  plenty of them in Thailand.

The same way many mass shooters get one. Either they steal one, buy it illegally, which seems to be an easy thing here, take it from their parents, or fabricate one. All those that kill innocents are mentally ill.

Perverse logic sir.
