You have less than 10 years?

One thing is I'm a realist.

And one thing I enjoy in my workplace which is a very large hospital is to tell older workmates usually in their 70's that they have less than 10 years left in probality.

Just the look on their faces the shock tells me they never thought of it.

Those of you now who are say 73/74 surely you must know !

I'm always bemused when I see their face looking like shock ,like they didn't know they would be going ????

I remember telling a old workmate a few years back ,77yo and still a cleaner ,wife was a Filipino , working all hours , he ended up reporting me for harassment just for letting him know about his lifespan and how he was wasting his 5 years left

I had another cleaner approach me in the staff mealroom and say you me "George you really are a low B**"*"d" !!

But I was just giving realist facts .

Does it make you a different person ,your plans ,doing more before the 10 years is up ??

Do you actually realise your not going up be here in 10 years or are you a denier ???

My late father was the same ,he used to get angry when I told him

  • Oh dear. If ever a post gave away a poster being a bit of a knob this is it.

  • Do you also tell people in wheelchairs that they will never be able to enjoy walking and running?   Do you tell impoverished people that they will probably always be hungry and poor and neve

  • I would imagine the shock is more to do with the fact that you've made a wholey inappropriate statement than anything else.   Who on earth goes around reminding people that they're going to

Interesting, George from Seinfeld was perplexed by the same thing and quizzed someone about not having long left

I was just speaking last night to a workmate about Seinfeld actually

I used to love Seinfeld, a lot of the old comedy shows are just not the same nowadays.

I used to love all the old British ones On the Buses , etc

Unfortunately this WOKE world has banned them !!!!

Only have to look at the new Australian Mother & Son re - made where the son is now black

To add to the fun, tell them at 75, they have about a 70% chance to make it one more year. At 80 50%. No wait save it for the party.

I hit a raw nerve with some of you !

Because you are deniers and not realists ,you don't want to think about dying

I'm sorry to be a realist.

And yet, you're the one working just a few more years before retiring to Thailand.

PS. Most people I've encountered didn't make it to 70.

Do you tell impoverished people that they will probably always be hungry and poor and never able to enjoy those things that most people take for granted?

Do you tell cancer victims that they will probably be dead by this time next year?

You sound like a useless piece of ****, exactly the type of person I'm happy to avoid.

Telling people they have a certain amount of time left is a despicable action. People who have made it to their 60's want to know they will be around for many more years. You think people should just give up when they hit a certain age? You live only once, and most want it to last forever. Of course everyone knows that's impossible but reminding them their demise will soon come, not knowing if they might live to 105 is not a realist but a dumb**s. You might die today. No one knows when they will go besides terminal ones and they still don't know exactly when, and are hoping they will go on. Keep your comments to yourself and hope karma doesn't come your way soon, because sometimes it does.

Climate changers say we only have 10 years left.

So you've got the same chances as us old guys.

Unless you're a climate denier.

My sister is 70 & I always tell her we are in the home stretch ...but she continues to work at a medical office. I always say isn't there something more you want to do? She says she wouldn't know what t do if she & her husband didn't work. ????  I think its a slave mentality but then again to each their own.

But yes OP I agree & tell folks  at best reach 83 & I believe that is the number that SS USA uses in max calcs. Because when you do a compare of starting at 62,66 or 70 & they all pretty much wash at 83

not everyone will die from the climate. i will be one that survives. then i can tell other survivors how i wasn't a denier.

Not sure if they really have 10 years. People are dropping all over in their 50's and 60's.

  • Popular Post

It's not unreasonable at all to consider ones own mortality, especially when you reach 70 or so. I'm surprised by some of the responses here, it sounds like the OP struck a nerve, well done for making people think.

Actually it should (if really understood) make people perk up & live the life they want to live. Not put anything on hold.

For instance when I told my sister we are in the home stretch I also say even if we had 20 left that would be the home stretch & not much at that. Most of us clearly remember Y2k well that was 23 years ago

Knowing this at least for myself it makes me realize while yes maybe we live once

(not sure about that ???? ) but for sure we dont live forever so lets not waste our homes stretch . Instead lets LIVE

Randomly telling people that they'll die soon, when they are most likely already well aware of that fact has nothing to do with "being a realist".

It's called "being a (censored)"

(edit... Bold font nothing to do with me...)

Considering your own mortality is fine. Going around telling others that they are going to die soon isn't.

Did it ever occur to you that they are shocked at your rudeness? Everyone knows they will die. Whether they choose to think about it or not should be their choice and not have some jerk thrust it on to their immediate consciousness.

Can you be that inconsiderate? And nasty...

You must be a lot of fun in the cancer ward...

Is this some sort of epiphany that you had and now you feel the need to share it w/everyone... ?

At 71, I probably have less than 10 years. It doesn't worry me one bit. I'm happy as a pig swimming in swill. If it's 5 so be it, or 2 so be it? I made a living will not to be resuscitated or operated on. To have a good life, it doesn't need to go on and on. The thought of living to more than 80 fills me with horror.

  • Popular Post

Actually, life expectancy increases with age. At birth you are  expected to die at 74. Those who reach 89  are expected to die  at 93.

Life  expectancy

Rather than 'strike a nerve' (as I'm not yet in the Death Zone), my thought was:

"I wonder if the OP knows he's going to get gutted like a fish by someone sick of his nonsense, and he'll not even live to see Christmas?"

At the very least he should keep an eye on his coffee in the break room, as hospitals have all sorts of things that might bring about his quick demise.

You have to assume 'once an a-hole, always an a-hole'. More enemies than friends.

With questions like the OP poses, his life expectancy is less than a 95 year old on a respirator.

Back in the day when me and some buddies were taking about longevity and retirement one said, just take out a tape measure and run it out to 72 and see where you're at. OMG I'm 73 in December!

When I was in my early 20s (almost 68 now), I picked up a saying "Life is terminal".

One of my high school best friend's father (in mid his 50s) died when we were in high school (my own father followed 5 years later when he was 67, and I 21).

My first high school class mate died in a car accident when I was 20-21.

In the late 1980s, I learnt that about 15-20% of my fellow students in high school in the late 1960s - early 1970s had already died in accidents or of health conditions.

Most of my good friends since the early 1980s have been 10-20 years older than me; the only one still alive will be 85 early next year; her only daughter died in December last year, aged 59.

The point - when you time comes, it comes, and most of us do not know when that date will arrive.

Same here,I gave my family Dr (Thai) a copy of my living will aka DNR Form...she told me she wished more elders would do that. I'm almost 73.

IMHO its not how long you live but the quality of life. I won't want to have to be taken to a hospital 3 times a week for dialysis for example or having to wear a pamper every day like a baby.

I've had more than my share of illnesses, operations etc. and enough already.

My family has been taken care of so I can rest in peace. My only regret is that I wish I had quit drinking much sooner than last year. Any time there was a bad event or f up in my life it was all attributed to excessive alcohol.(curse of the working class) is a quote from someone?

I was shocked hearing at the age of 35y 50% passed away already.

????

You have not hit a nerve, you have just exposed the type of person you are.

if you want a realist answer, you are an air thief, completely useless to anyone.

Get a real life and avoid the non stop sh#t you post.
