Some locals seem increasingly concerned about the type of Visa I am on.

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Over the last few days I have been asked by a few locals what kind of visa I have, given that I can speak Thai and have been here a long time.

it left me with quite a weird feeling.

What business is it of theirs what visa I am on?

when you see a foreigner in the UK, USA or wherever that can speak English, do you ask them what visa they have?

do you even care?

It seems that many Thais don’t like the fact that people can speak their language and stay here long term,

their line of questioning seems to be rather investigative, trying to figure out if one is on overstay.

I personally think the Chinafication of Thailand is now almost complete,

there are cctv cameras on every corner and now there are members of the public doing the states work.

It is becoming increasingly Orwellian out there.

I imagine most are hoping it's a 30 day visitors visa.

I don't think I've ever encountered a local that knows we have to have a VISA. Sounds like you made this up Bob.

Its what you look like and who you associate with Bob. Been here 35 years and never been asked once. But for sure you and I run in completely different crowds. You have had "occasions" with these same people before. Hope you get the attention you are seeking.

I have never been asked, are you sure you never had a nightmare..........🤭

I've been asked quite a few times, but then its pretty obvious i look under 50.

I move in all echelons of society.

Last night I was wining and dining with the rich,

tonight I will be mixing it with the backpackers somewhere.

Unlike you I don’t discriminate people based on their supposed wealth.

I take people at face value. Most Thais I have met have been sub par to say the least.

It’s none of their business what visa we are on.

They can look as much as they like but sadly for them it’s a case of nothing to see here.

everything is above board with me.

There are zero flies on bob smith.

Maybe these dum@$$es saw something on tv abt overstaying foreigners or such..

It's always the most plausible explanation

I just tell them that I'm on a special VIP visa, issued by the Thai government for ex-SAS/Navy Seals etc.  And if they dare to gossip about this, then I will have to kill them....

Well, leave then, if you don't like it. Stop your whining and move somewhere that suits your delicate sensibilities. The most surveilled country is in fact the UK with most camera per head of population, although I read that some years ago and it might have changed. For what it is worth, there seem tome to be many fewer cameras here compared to the UK. Anyway, I quite like the cameras, I have many at my homes.

They can call immigration and I will show my passport if they have an issue.

After that I may proceed with a defamation case against them.

Nothing is of anyone's business ...but what a pointless attitude that would be.

Indeed, I do wonder if these "go home" farangy members have a thing about other farangy's in LOS, perhaps a superiority complex.....🧐

most Thais have no interest or indeed any knowledge about visas, why would they?  , The visa scrutineers are normally just a handful of sanctimonious geriatrics that frequent this forum.  ones visa status is between you and immigration and nobody else.  My brother in law is a police officer, a chief inspector, and he has no concept whatsoever about visas or any of the hoops foreigners have to jump through to remain here

I always play them at their own game.

That’s how I survive here.

It’s also how you eventually become a naturalized Thai.

Same visa as me!

No one's ever asked me, but I live in an unfashionable provincial backwater, on the fringes of a war zone.

I think it may be more a reflection of how you talk to and treat people, especially women. Gossip gets around and your the one putting it out there.
