Smokin’ scuffle: Foreigner’s taxi tantrum goes viral in Phuket

Should have chopped his arm also - would have had problems then smoking then!

I am also not the biggest fan of Thai taxi drivers at times but as a smoker can refrain from smoking for an hour or so, I find usually the offer of a small tip the guys will usually pull over for a few mins to get our cravings, half of the time they smoke themselves so are quite happy with the break and gives us a chance to socialise with our Asian brothers!

As an ex-smoker I know what it is like to be in nicotine withdrawal after a 15 hour international flight and not be able to smoke even outside the freaking airport and you lite up as soon as possible. I actually can relate to this guys rage but in no way condone violence. But what was he supposed to do? Get out and find another cab he could smoke in or have the driver pull over while he wasted time on the side of the road smoking a fag and watching the meter tick?   Now this is why I started vaping because I can easily get my fix anywhere in public and even on the plane w/o anyone knowing the better. You learn how to "sneak vape" without producing "clouds".  Plus it doesn't stink and actually smells good!.

Most of the official thai taxi drivers or tuk tuk drivers are just a bunch of cheats and we all know how they refuse to turn the meter ON and other of their tricks.

But that is no reason for farangs to misbehave and be abusive. Many westerners in Thailand have an attitude and think themselves to be in conquered colonised territory. Such people should be plainly deported on the spot and banned from the kingdom on periods of time that depend on the level of their offense.

I know they're cheats, but one thing to remember is that the flag-fall on the meter is as it was 25 years ago, 35 Baht. It's an illustration of how people in Thailand are screwed money-wise. I reckon that that flag-fall anount should be 60-70 Baht today to reflect inflation.

I'm pretty sure that when I first visited Thailand in 1985 meters had yet to be introduced, you always negotiated the price with the driver before travelling.

More 'foreigner'news. First, no proper research done about the foreigner's nationality (didn't I recently read news that an alleged offender's nationality was not to be mentioned in the media?). One minute he's German or possibly Austrian. Next, he's identified as German as a definite. Brings to mind the recently reported 'car driving on the beach' incident. It was all foreigner, foreigner, foreigner initially, before it turned out it was actually a Thai driving his - alleged - 'rental' car along the beach for a few metres. So, is it confirmed he/she was a Thai citizen? Can we now receive a correction and apology by this media outlet for misrepresenting and lying about the facts? All foreigners were defamed in the process and should file a defamation case as a means of encouraging and enforcing proper reporting and not just unsubstantiated gossip.

For crying out loud, what gets into these people!

Apart from walking around with ridiculous facial hair that makes him look like an extra from an Asterix the Gaul movie, he arrives in Thailand, gets off the airplane and promptly picks a fight!

The BIB should shave his ludicrous facial hair off and charge him 50,000 Baht fir the pleasure

The reports on "taxi bad behaviour " seems to have gone full circle as the apparent campaign against farangs seems to be gaining pace.

The reports used to be centred on taxi drivers trying to overcharge, dropping people off in the middle of "nowhere" due to a disputed increase in fare, refusing to put the meter on etc etc etc.

It is fairly common knowledge that Anutin has got it in for "dirty unwashed foreigners", and now there seems to be a concerted effort to find any misdemeanour by foreigners, and publish it in the media. (I can not recall any recent reports of "bad behaviour" by Thais, but I am sure that it happens.)

All a bit bizarre when the Government and TAT are desperate to attract more tourists to LOS!

What a low life moron. This is exactly the kind of jackass that makes Thai's dislike foreigners. and who smokes in a car these days especially without permission. Charge him or better yet deport him and dont let him come back.

It was a green and white plate on the taxi so I think it was a pre-arranged fee taxi from the airport.

Whatever, what a clown, picking a fight because he can't smoke in a taxi moments after arriving in his paradise!

Book him Danno!

The Germans from Austria are the worst.

Thank you for this statement. I feel better now, because I am a German from Germany. 😉

The situation escalated when the foreign man began smoking inside the cab

A reasonable request IMO. The taxi driver has my full support. Yet another arrogant farang who thinks it is his "divine right" to smoke when it is against the law.

During my time living in Thailand, all the taxis I travelled in displayed "no smoking" signs inside. I am a non-smoker so no problem for me.

I found this photo amusing of a Thai taxi with warning signs:-

Taxi Rules | In Thailand: no smoking, no durian, no booze, n ...

No smoking

No Durians

No alcohol

No dogs

No bonking (sex)

No weapons

No crazy goats!!

Is that not a Kwai?

Yes indeed, it could be a kwai (water buffalo). My photo gallery source states "crazy goat" but thank you.

I thought so because of the horns, and a goat tail is short and points up or out not hanging down.

Isn't a Kwai a bad word for an old fat farang. Perhaps not wanted in his Taxi

No, I don't know how that is. I've lived here for 26+ yrs and yes there are some in the more touristy areas and even at the airports who don't want to turn on their meters, but you made a ridiculous claim. Come back when you been here a little longer and are not living on Sathorn or Sukhumvit Soi 11.

If they won't turn on metre, I ask for a price and then barter, if we agree I take the ride but no tip, if disagree I just walk away. But I don't smoke anymore over 10 years and never smoked in a cab in my life.
