Thailand Supplies Bhutan with Locally-Made Armoured Vehicles and Pistols

In a key ceremony yesterday, Thailand transferred a significant cache of arms to Bhutan’s police force, solidifying defence ties between the two nations. The delivery, overseen by Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang, included 10 armoured vehicles and 230 pistols, all produced by Thai manufacturers.

 

Held at the Defence Ministry's headquarters, the event underscored the cooperation between Thailand and Bhutan. The Bhutanese ambassador to Thailand was present to receive the weapons produced by Thai Defense Industry Co Ltd (TDI) and Weapons Manufacturing Industries Co Ltd (WMI).

 

The transfer featured 10 First Win 4x4 armoured tactical vehicles from TDI, created in partnership with the Defence Technology Institute. Alongside these, 230 pistols by WMI were handed over, further marking the collaborative effort.

 

Minister Sutin expressed his belief that these exported weapons would enhance confidence in Thailand’s defence industry. He emphasised the pivotal role of the Defence Technology Institute in advancing the sector and highlighted the significance of this export venture.

 

Nopparat, CEO of TDI and widely known as Madame Tank, disclosed Bhutan's plans to use the vehicles for peacekeeping in Central Africa. She noted that TDI has had a long-standing partnership with Bhutan, recalling the delivery of 45 armoured vehicles to the Arab state back in 2001.

 

Nopparat also revealed that the Philippines is interested in procuring 900 armoured vehicles from TDI, starting with an initial order of 200. She highlighted that the company has supplied armoured vehicles to militaries in 46 countries.

 

The advanced armoured vehicles feature shielded tops for enhanced defence against drone attacks. Local Thai security agencies, including the Internal Operation Command and Royal Thai Navy, have also shown interest in acquiring these vehicles.

 

In addition to vehicles, Bhutan procured 30 MI-9 9mm pistols and 200 MI-47 7.62mm pistols from WMI, showcasing Thailand’s growing impact in the global arms market. 

 

This arms transfer marks a strengthening of defence collaboration, reflecting confidence in Thailand's military manufacturing prowess.

Those Thai executives really know the world, it seems. Guess, unlike others, she didn't go to school overseas.

 

Well, as long as they don't deliver the goods by ship to the Arabian Peninsula, before finding out, searching Google, about Bhutan's actual location... 😆

Why would the Thai Navy need these vehicles, it is not as if they would float?

The article in the BP does show them with the UN logo but it does not mention how they are to be utilised.
