Swiss Expat Sentencing in Phuket Set for September 3rd

The trial of Swiss expat Urs Fehr, often referred to as ‘Swiss David,’ is scheduled to conclude on September 3rd. Fehr, the founder of the Green Elephant Sanctuary Park in Cherng Talay, faces an assault charge stemming from a February incident in which he allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao Chandam, a Dibuk Hospital doctor, outside his rented luxury villa in Pa Khlok.

In February, Dr. Thandao and a friend were sitting on steps leading to Yamu Beach, watching the full moon, when Fehr reportedly approached them, demanded they leave, and allegedly kicked Dr. Thandao in the back. Fehr, however, claims he slipped while approaching the pair.

A widely circulated video of the incident sparked anti-foreigner sentiment among locals, leading to a protest at the beach near Fehr’s residence, reported The Phuket News.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the steps leading to the beach were illegally constructed on public land and were later demolished. Officials clarified that Fehr and his wife mistakenly believed their property rights included the steps.

Despite an initial March announcement from the Immigration Bureau revoking Fehr’s residence permit, he has remained in Phuket, awaiting legal proceedings. Anuphong Panarat, Secretary to the Governor of Phuket, confirmed Fehr’s continued presence, noting that he is allowed to stay due to the ongoing legal case.

"Mr. Fehr remains in the country to face the assault charge. He has not engaged in any business activities during this time," Anuphong stated. Dr. Thandao expressed relief that the case is nearing resolution. "The trial concludes on September 3rd, and appropriate sentencing will follow," said Dr. Thandao.

Fehr has been granted recurring 30-day stays under bail conditions, which include residing in approved housing, bi-weekly check-ins with authorities, and refraining from work or illegal activities.

"The case is ongoing, but justice is expected to be served soon," Dr. Thandao concluded, thanking the Phuket community and local media for their support.

this is common assault but hardly a brutlal encounter, a few lessons have been learned, this guy needs to stop bullying people especially when he was 100% in the wrong - it wasn't ever his property

pay the lady a large amount of money and you might even get to stay in Thailand

you were wrong

The whole story reeks of racism. Racism shared by the former dismissed leader of the defunct Move Forward syndicate.

That alleged  kick deserved a 2000 Baht fine.

If a thai person did the same thing they wouldnt be fined anything because the police assumes they have no money

The Dr will get a few hundred thousand baht as compensation,  sore back etc ...

Everyone will get a birds nest basket and flowers and wai's all around.

It'll all be put down as a big misunderstanding ....      and it'll be forgotten in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully, as we all have more important things to do like enjoying life while we have it.

Doubtful since it has been ongoing for months already.

I bet if someone kicked you in the back, you would then be delighted at them paying 2000 baht for the privilege...

No.
I have been kicking quite a few Thais lately and a lot harder than that limp ankled attempt by Dopey David.

i am heading down to my Muay Thai gym in an hour or so to give a few more a good kicking.

i really enjoy it.

I don’t think it was a racial attack.

More David’s frail ego and short temper, but not racist.

Rubbish, Thais pay compensation to drop charges all the time. It is way the legal system works here, the police see if they can get a compromise which saves court time.

Very clever these Thais.

If my wife or anyone I cared about were kicked like this, I’d be demanding a Machiavellian response - regardless of the nationality of who committed the attack.

In this case I’d like to see a firm & harsh penalty but also so firm & harsh penalties for Thais who do similar be against other Thais or Westerners.

So, whatever precedent is set here, it should be followed with other cases such as bouncers kicking your tin the head (Pattaya Soi 6 etc).

This Swiss guy from what I have read seems to have many anger issues and no filter on violent action.

It's better for all of us here if people like him are deported and banned, every time something like this happens it reflects on all of us.

Nonsense. They'd be fined something small and that would be it.
