Looks more like questionable building standards, rather than the power of the earthquake

And you're a structural engineer plus you're psychic, right? So do tell us what you can see in this footage that shows exactly what was defective upon which you base your mighty insight. . There hasn't even been an investigation yet.

Well no, the earthquake was a factor , but the building should have been built to withstand the earthquake .    Was the concrete below given  enough time to cure before the upper part of the buil

No need to speak in that tone .

Try speaking more civilly

Everyone out on the streets helps how?

   Just general common sense .

Concrete takes 28 days to fully cure to get its full strength

After 7 days of curing concrete has 60 % of its strength .

With the amount of white dust , it appears that the concrete wasn't fully cured

What you are saying it for normal concrete strength which is 17 to 28 mpa, higher strength concrete can take longer  depending on the design mix  and without the specifications on the building which would give the concrete design mix its anybodys guess, and thats where the money is saved and pocketed  a  "normal mix" ratio is 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 4 parts aggregate,  less cement more sand more profit you still get the building but !! the safety and quality is gone

The building wasn't finished, it was still under construction you tωit. There has been no other damage reported.

For those of you not paying attention, the building was under construction and the crane and everything else came down. No other buildings had any reported damage as of this story. I live in a high rise and a few things were knocked off shelves

Do'h , OF COURSE  I meant the parts of the building that had already been built .

The building standards of the building that had already been built !!!!!!

The concrete pillars that had already been built .

You are just looking for an argument and trying to pick a fight

Getting around BKK is bad enough at the best of times, the place will come to a stand still,

High Rise Building Collapses in Chatuchak, Workers Flee for Their Lives

image.jpeg

A building collapse in Chatuchak, Bangkok, has left authorities scrambling to assess the number of casualties and possible survivors trapped under the rubble. The structure, still under construction, crumbled into dust in a matter of seconds, sending construction workers running for their lives.

Footage circulating on social media captures the terrifying moment workers flee from the towering structure. Just moments after they escape, the entire building collapses with a deafening crash, sending a massive cloud of dust and debris into the air.

Eyewitnesses described the scene of panic, with workers shouting and sprinting to safety as the building shook and ultimately gave way. “It was like an earthquake,” said one witness. “The ground trembled, and then, in an instant, the whole building just came down. It was horrifying.”

Authorities have yet to confirm the number of injured or missing persons. Rescue teams, including Bangkok emergency responders and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, are conducting thorough searches of the wreckage to locate survivors.

The collapse followed a 7.7 earthquake in Burma  which shock many parts of Bangkok.

Another possibility could be soil liquefaction. In one video it looks like the structural failure occurs on almost all the floors simultaneously. It doesn't look like the building pancaked from the top down, which suggests to me that the root cause of the collapse might be foundation related, i.e., soil liquefaction, with not fully cured concrete being a major contributing factor.

I'm sick to my stomach for all the workers on the building site.

I'm getting 9/11 vibes again watching those videos. I hope Thailand doesn't invade Iraq now.

Yes there has according to the government.

There was a crane operating on the top. Chances are it was still under construction.

What’s what I read.

I would agree, Bangkok being really quite a distance from the epicentre (Sagaing Fault in Myanmar). Also, German expert sources mention 6.6, as opposed to 7.7 Richter for the quake. That's a big difference.

That would make sense. Bangkok is built on very poorly consolidated sediments (fluvial/alluvials to paralic clastics from the Chao Prayah river system). I would guess that any building of some size in Bangkok requires rather deep foundations, and of course concrete requires time to cure....

A lot of investigation required here, and lessons to be learnt maybe?

Could have been worse, not very often we feel earthquakes as strong as this in Bangkok.

I too was thinking the building collapse looked very much like the 3 towers on 9/11.

HARP ??

Stop being an arrogant, argumentative ass. A fair assumption would be that many people have lost their lives today due to this event and all you have to contribute is a total lack of empathy for the victims and disdain for anyone who has the audacity to voice an opinion, right or wrong, as to the root cause of a building collapse.

40+ construction crew no longer with us.

Rest In Peace.
