I have lived in Thailand unbroken 34 year. Not once have ever come across a restaurant that either had sign or ask me to remove my shoes. If so I would most likely just leave.

Same here Ive been here 25 years, never been in a place were I have had to take off my shoes, apart from the temple, which I knew about so I took a plastic bag with me, taking them off to go in a restaurant is abit to much, I would just leave also,

This stupid requirement is the exception rather than the rule for the vast majority of Thai businesses, so yes it is uncommon.

I have seen this rule in Temples and dentists but very few Thai businesses follow this nonsense.

 

Lived here for nearly 30 years and I have never been asked to remove my shoes in a restaurant or cafe, in fact, I have never even heard of a restaurant or cafe with this rule.

There are a couple of pharmacies near me that have a sign in Thai to remove shoes but as a dirty foreigner I can't read Thai so don't remove my shoes 😝...a silly request in the first place  no one removes their shoes to go into Lotus or Big C  they don't even require it at a hospital.

I've got two small coffee shops near my place in Bangkok suburbia that ask customers to remove their shoes on entering.

 

It's why I rarely visit them, despite one being quite nice.

 

There are also a few office-like places and a barber shop near me that request the same, so it does still happen.

It's annoying if you're wearing shoes with long laces.

True that tourist money has helped Thailand just like many other countries, it was her comment Quote "my money built your country" end of quote which is an entitled insult.

 

As for that old chime of "expat money claim keeps Thailand a float" what is that to do with this conversation? Plus only 30,000 Baht a month? Like any retired person they will spend their money regardless of which country they live in, yes it helps the econamy but not to the extent that Thailand would sink without it.
