An Australian teenager's harrowing experience in Phuket serves as a stark warning to young tourists tempted by nightlife in Thailand. Mia Pacor, 18, shared on TikTok how a night that began innocently almost ended in disaster when a couple allegedly tried to entice her and a friend, Jack, both just 16 at the time, into taking drugs.

The duo had sneaked out of their hotel to meet a pair of thirtysomethings they’d met earlier. “Red flags were everywhere,” Mia noted. “We should have known this was not going to be a good idea.”

The older couple took them to Bangla Road, a renowned party spot, and treated them to around ten drinks each before leading them into a popular nightclub. However, the atmosphere soon turned ominous.

Jack recounted that the man attempted to lure him into a toilet, offering what appeared to be cocaine. Meanwhile, Mia was approached with a similar proposition by the woman. Both teens rejected the offers and dashed back to their hotel at 4am, deeply unsettled.

Mia stressed the gravity of the situation by highlighting Thailand’s strict anti-drug laws. Possession of illegal drugs can lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment or even execution. Cocaine, classified as a Category 2 drug, can result in up to five years in prison.

Reflecting later, Mia suspected the couple might have been colluding with authorities to trap unsuspecting tourists. “I knew they were just off,” she said.

The gravity of the situation truly hit home when Mia disclosed the ordeal to her father weeks later. “He was so disappointed,” she recounted.

After sharing her story online, her video went viral, inundated with comments from others who faced similar threats. Warnings rang through: “That nightclub is full of scammers, this is known. Stay away from there.” Another user shared, “My brother got methanol poisoning there years ago. Be wary.”

Mia's experience underscores the perilous potential of such encounters in places with stringent drug laws. Her advice to fellow travellers? Trust your instincts, stick with your group, and if something seems off, steer clear.

For young tourists, especially, recognising these dangers is crucial in ensuring their travels remain safe and memorable for the right reasons.

Utter nonsense -- at least in this situation

just think for a change.

a thirty-something undercover police couple did not tempt two minors to sneak out and meet them later and offer them drugs to arrest and extort them.  There is no upside -- it is unlikely two teens have enough money at their disposal to justify putting that time and effort into extorting them.

Perhaps the couple had more nefarious plans, perhaps they were stupid and just thought they were being cool. Perhaps -- and I think this is most likely -- the teens misrepresented their age and got scared and ran away when <deleted> got real.

I'd say their story is a bit of BS for internet attention

It's kind of the point of clubs, but not, however, the point of the story

This tale surely serves as a stark reminder as well.

Edit : I stand corrected there was indeed a "stark warning" included in the OP 🙂

So are they saying the police are dodgy 😄 or have they just made this up for likes on Instagram etc .

She's lucky she still has both of her kidneys.

And yes.  That's a joke.  Kinda...

My advice to anyone from the USA who asks me for Thailand safety tips:  Don't drink anything that comes in a bucket.  I hope they're smart enough to extrapolate that to anything that comes in a ziplock bag.

Thai prisons cannot be compared with Western prisons. Simply don't break the law and avoid bad people.

So, it took many drinks and a long time before the red flags started waving?

Well done Mia and Jack.  You scammed 10 drinks of of them.  I'm sure you got many "thumbs ups" and "likes" on your socials playing the victim, which is what it's all about, right?
