Foreign Cyclist's Reckless Manoeuvre Sparks Outrage in Phuket

Outrage erupted among Thai netizens upon witnessing a foreign cyclist cutting dangerously in front of a pickup truck on a busy Phuket road. Driver Pusana Ai Senrit shared the dashcam footage of the incident in a Facebook group known for exposing reckless driving.

The video captures the cyclist shifting from the left shoulder to the far-right lane, nearly colliding with Pusana’s vehicle on Bypass Road. Quick reflexes were the only thing preventing a serious accident. The online community were not shy to express their anger, with comments criticising the cyclist's actions as careless and foolish.

Among the reactions were warnings and sarcastic remarks pointing to the foreign cyclist’s lack of regard for safety. Others raised concerns over larger vehicles being blamed if an accident occurred. Some suggested the cyclist should have walked his bike instead of attempting such a precarious move.

The legality of the cyclist’s actions was called into question. Thai law requires cyclists to adhere to the shoulder or designated cycling lanes on main roads. Violating these rules can lead to fines, as highlighted by this incident, reported The Thaiger.

There’s no word yet on whether legal action will follow. However, the situation remains a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic laws. Last year, in Chiang Mai, two foreign cyclists faced hefty fines for a similar breach. They issued public apologies and paid 10,000 baht each after unlawfully riding electric unicycles on the road.

The pattern of incidents involving foreign cyclists flouting local traffic laws seems to be ruffling feathers. As discussions continue, this latest incident shines a spotlight on road safety responsibilities for cyclists and drivers alike.

Oh, Oh,Oh the netizens ...... complaining about foreigners all the time, while the netizens are very good in following all the traffic rules.. driving without helmets, speeding, driving against the flow even on highways, walking in the middle of the road, playing on their phones, driving through red lights..parking in a corner or in front of a traffic light... and many more, but as soon as foreigner is involved they are outraged.. But where are the special lanes for cyclists???there is no infrastructure in Thailand even the side walks are occupied with stalls ... And in fact this man on the video is doing nothing wrong as he want to turn right and  Thai motorcyclists are doing the same most of the times without looking if there is traffic behind them

Hey, now you have to stop take all so personal. It´s a sign of mental illness.

Cyclist turning right. Seems he overlooked the dashcam car, maybe because the dashcam car was driving slowly in the righthand lane, being overtaking on the left

But "causing outrage" ?????

Thai netizens should get free classes in anger management.. 🙂

Lovely deflection and whataboutism.

And the irony of your netizen outrage over alleged netizen outrage that you didn’t even read.

click on the page and have a look. Quite mild and some numerous comments. Your netizen outrage far exceeding any of their comments.

Lets face it was a terrible move, but thanks for apologizing for “us”.

Thanks for making me laugh.

It is quite an unusual manoeuvre in Thailand (or Isaan at least)........I rarely see motorbikes/cyclists (with good reason) cross over to turn or move to the middle of the road to turn.

99% pull into the lefthand side and wait for a gap.........the chances of being smacked from behind turning, as we are taught to do in the UK, is very high.

22 comments on the page. Mostly humorous.

4 which I would consider to be angry.

Facebook page is Pusana Ai Senrit if you want to take a look.

I think we will beat it here to be honest.

Hey, that ain't legal!

Why, I'm...................outraged!

I thought all vehicles are supposed to move to the righthand lane when turning right. But he didn't use his right arm to signal what he intended.

Even on a motorbike, I was pulled over for moving into the righthand lane once when wishing to turn right. I really did not know what to say to the policeman.

Think you'll find the best and safest method is to clearly look first for a safe lane crossing moment. The arm waving can come second.

If you want to stay alive.....best to pull in to the lefthand side and wait for a gap to cross.

Exactly. Locals (and foreigners that have lived here long enough) all exhibit the same trait of moving across lanes, or turning from a side street into traffic without looking and/or signalling. The onus is for the vehicle, scooter or bicycle already in the main traffic flow and approaching from behind to see them first and give way to the crossing or 'merging' traffic. Always has been that way and always will be. The reason for this is in their own 'highway code'.

For example, drivers here, when entering from a side street, don't slow or stop and look for a break in the traffic first. Instead, they slowly butt in and then crawl along the hard shoulder, never accelerating up to speed. They are waiting for the break in traffic that their own highway code instructs them to do. But that break never comes because drivers here don't maintain lane discipline and, if they are in the right lane and come up behind a slower vehicle, will cut to a left lane to 'undertake' the other vehicle and closing any gap that merging traffic may have been planning to use.

Not part of the Thai highway code so it will never happen.

That area and road are lethal perfect for testing your Lamborghini.

These very same netizens who sit in their chairs and moan and groan about what's going on in Thailand, and the crazy acts that foreigners are committing, are the exact same people who appear to be reasonable human beings, who then get behind a wheel and drive like absolute maniacs, taking the kinds of risks nobody would dream of taking with their families in the car. They will make u-turns on a four-lane highway with vehicles traveling at 120 kph and cut right in front of a car even though there's nobody behind them for a thousand meters, and yet they sit on their keyboards complaining about somebody riding a bicycle and swerving a bit.

Sorry. Zero credibility.

The bicycle terrorists have arrived in Thailand...think they own the road...

Just drive over them...Europe is full of these idiots who think they own the road and are driving in the tour the France.

My God, I'll go to the foot of our stairs! Only those damn foreigners drive like braindead chickens, imagine how bad the roads could be if more people, maybe even one or two Thai people were to drive just as badly, what carnage on the roads.

Lol - if that had of been a Thai rider this wouldn't have even made the news.

Last week I was following a pick-up on my scooter. Another scooter tried to zip past on the left side. Female driver, small child in front of her and a guy on the back.
Pick-up suddenly slows and I slow as well. Can't go around the right side due to oncoming traffic.

There was a parked car on the left side which is why the truck slowed down. The scooter that tried to go up the left side suddenly had to slow as well and ended up back behind me.

The truck and I pass the car and I hear someone yelling behind me. Then the scooter whips by me on the left side and as she passes the truck the guy is still yelling - at ME !
Like somehow the parked car on the left that made her slow down was my fault !
I was going to respond but they took off up the road like they were late for a free food hand-out.

And just today I was riding to Jomtien, going down Thepprasit in a pack of scooters doing about 50km/hr.

Suddenly, some <deleted> comes from a side road and cuts right into the middle of us, one hand on the controls, one holding his phone (naturally) as he cut from the left across 3 lanes so he could get to the intersection 30 meters ahead of us.
Had to hit the brakes and cut to the left as he passed in front of me. Luckily there was enough room.

Then I looked in my mirror. There was a gap of nearly 100 meters behind us with no vehicles. All that moe-ron had to do was wait 2 seconds and he could have crossed easily without putting anyone at risk.

But no, why do that when you can just force yourself into a pack of scooters and force them to ride around you ?

I can only imagine what would have happened if he'd hit someone.

But that didn't make the news - or social media.

Stuff like that happens a thousand times a day and never makes the news.

Unless a foreigner is involved of course.

Since the cyclist has no rear-view mirror and that the other road users must see this and must be considerate accordingly, the excitement is incomprehensible. So he did nothing wrong!

In French, we say C'est l'Hôpital qui se fout de la Charité !

Could be translated as

It's the Hospital that doesn't give a damn about the Charity                                                                                       In English : “People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.”                                                              Just consider the locals on their motosaiks and the number of casualties.

He wanted to turn right at the up coming u turn, so had no choice but to move to the far right lane.

Why he didn’t signal his intention with a hand signal, I really have no idea. Had he done so he would have completed a normal manouvre. Without signaling, he comes across as an idiot.

Yep. Dumb way to die.

But hey, I had 2 school kids (without helmets) on a motorcycle do that in front of me yesterday at 110kph. I simply moved the left lane to avoid them but then they swerved back  in front of me laughing.

Outraged? Was I what!

The only safe way....and the way most Thais do it....is to pull into the LHS, wait for a gap and then 'cross' the road
