What annoys you most about the roads (not the drivers)?

Featured Replies

Ok, ok we could write forever about Thai drivers, but what things annoy you most about the ROADS?

For example..

- dangerous u-turns

- speed humps with no warning at all

- lack of lighting

- too much warning for a corner that isn't dangerous, compared to no warning for a corner that is

- the rumble strips of paingt that rattle your car to pieces but have no purpose (my pet peeve)

- stupidly-designed roads that make traffic worse, not better

Take it away, guys.....

  • The nice flat road, smooth surface, relax into the speed, then for no apparent reason, and without any warning, its like the entire stretch of raod has been hit by a mortar attack !!

  • The U-Turns usually have road signs right in your line of vision for oncoming traffic, or the U turn is shared with oncoming traffic and  if someone is waiting there, you cant see anything of oncoming

  • \ Exactly my thoughts also. U-turn are not that dangerous as long as they are not shared with oncoming traffic, e.g. don't block visibility

Mostly riding out of town and away from Bangkok it is mainly other drivers that's the main problem.

Have found beautiful roads all over Thailand, but it is up to me to make the trip as safe as I can make it knowing that I'm not the only one on the road.

Lack of law enforcement.

Members here are always moaning about the Thai's and their poor driving habits but it's the cops not policing our roads.

If you're not going to get a ticket you'll break the law.

We've all been there, driving differently, doing things that we wouldn't do in our home country

Heavy reliance on U turns, the most dangerous maneuver

pot holes and drains, I'm forever bouncing about on the scooter

Too many traffic lights which is why Thais go through, I'm going native with this

Near me they turn the street lights off before it's light, dangerous

to add ...

... no real inter provincial roads of any length N/S.  Too many stops & cross traffic.

... roads not or poorly designed for higher speeds, curves too tight, as when using cruise control, the sway of the car activates a lower speed.  Somehow the car is smarter than the engineers.  Or, no angle or worse, wrong angle on curves, and increases the centrifugal forces on the vehicle.

- no green wave at traffic lights ...

- traffic lights functions not according the traffic volume ...

-  too many traffic lights instead having roundabouts  like in other countries ...

(roundabouts are maybe to difficlult to understand for some ...)

- Very poorly timed traffic lights that 'appear' out of sync preventing traffic flow.

- No advanced traffic city wide traffic light system.

- Lethal practices to not have road works well lit at night (causing many serious accidents).

- Toll booths (in BKK) that have a barrier instead of Auto-recognition (and charging).

- Dangerous 'interprovincial roads' with too many access points rather than 'motorways'

- In certain areas poor road quality rendering the inside lane un-navigable.

- Unnavigable pavements forcing foot-traffic onto the roads.

- Pedestrian crossings too close to junctions (dangerous - but largely ignored anyway).

- Lack of patrolling enforcement of dangerous drivers.

- Poor safety engineering - i.e. lamp posts and immovable objects right next to the roads / tree in central reservations.

- Central reservations without barriers (armco barriers - wayward traffic can enter opposing lanes on a lot of highways).

- U-Turns - lethal and one of the greatest issues.

Respectful mention:

- The Expressway network in BKK is excellent.

Other cars annoy me. 2 door blue cars in particular. Don't get me started on 2 door blue cars that are driverless. Why can't people understand that it's MY soi?🙃🙃

Roundabouts.  They only work if UK-style rules apply, but using French rules plus Thai style results in total chaos.

People in front of me that wait ten minutes for the light to change, then wait to put their car in gear, and then creep though the light.

The guy in front of me, that leaves three four car lengths between him that the car in front of him when we're in line making a U-turn.

A-holes that have to stop a row of cars making U-turns, which results in worse traffic.

Over passes.

Quote

OVERPASS definition: 1. a bridge that carries a road or railway over another road

That is dependent on which Amphur is or isn't paying for it.

Same as UK, left hand drive minimal U turns

The intersections what traffic is worst, are too close together, and they take double the width of the road. Out in the sticks, okay, but that's generally not where traffic is worst. Speeding up one intersection, typically just moves the traffic to the next intersection.

Where are you? I'm in Bangkok, I diver daily, and it seems like they do the best they can with the overpasses and whatnot.

Not liquor stores but I do miss the drive through Daiquiri Shops.

Agree, I've lived in a number of places in the US (NH, MA, MD, VA, DC, NYC, TX, IL, CA) and Thailand is a charm compared to there.

Engineering design, lack of adequate base and crowning, curve banking in the opposite slope, lame hazardous merge lanes and many other engineering failures.

Pattaya has a multitude of terrible design flaws in the roads.

My particular peeve are the pedestrian crosswalks placed at 2nd road near Soi6 and on Pattaya Klang near Buakhao.

They are placed immediately after someone comes from the smaller Soi blends in without warning and without visibility to the traffic light.

Coming from that Soi (Soi AR?) into 2nd road you have a lot of things to look for, with a large tree blocking your view, and immediately as you're in 2nd road there is a crosswalk which has a traffic light exactly above your head so you can't see if it's green or not. WHY not place the crosswalk BEFORE the merging area?

Driving on the wrong side!

  • 3 weeks later...

Disastrous side roads... I'm talking about Hua Hin, a relatively wealthy town in Thailand!
