It poses a moral question...    Going through IVF there is the ability to chose gender - its illegal in Thailand, but still offered.

However, the point is quite valid - is it ethical to Genetically Edit out downs syndrome ?

 

That question has already been answered by society to some extent - Amniocentese is carried out between the 15-20 week term of pregnancy, a small sample of amniotic fluid is taken from the womb to test for genetic or chromosomal conditions in an unborn baby, such as Down syndrome - in 'many / most' countries, parents have the choice to opt for abortion should the results indicate downs syndrome. 

 

In the case of gene editing - consideration of such a difficult decision (abortion) would be removed, though cost may play a significant roll in such 'editing' which again brings further moral questions. 

 

 

As far as other questions - its just a bit, silly and deliberately provocative IMO - society doesn't really care about lefties & gingers one way or another.

 

Currently, the only people in society who are bothered about gays in the civilised world are the gays themselves - no one else is interested one way or another (until drama and 'special rights' start getting demanded - a separate discussion).

But, IF parents had a choice, would the Opt to edit out a 'gay gene' (if there is such a thing) - from a purely selfish perspective, if being truly honest with themselves, many may say yes - purely from the facet that one day they'd want to be 'grand-parents' - but then that opens up the discussion on gay adoption etc... (again, a separate discussion).

 

Personally - I think such issues should come down to individual choice - I 'would' chose it edit out downs and any other potential 'health issues' or 'serious physical issues'...  and I'd have no moral doubts about that...

At the same time, I'd be completely indifferent to other attributes such as freckles, eye colour, left-right handed, hair colour and sexuality etc...
