I tossed the Omeprazole  due to side effects . Resorted to warm ginger tea and honey and separately warm water with only enough baking soda as will sit loosely on the small finger fingernail after food. The worst was to sit up against the headboard to sleep.

The episode lasted 5 weeks. Now mostly sleep on my right side.

I had acid reflux leading to esophagitis .

Worked for me but not suggesting as advice for you.

Yes. It works well for me. I take one tablet every other day and no more acid reflux. Some studies advise against long term useage but in my opinion taking it is better than not taking it. I also have the head of my bed raised 4 inches which  helps.

Have you been tested for helicobactor pylori?

Nothing seemed to fix my gerd until my doc tested and gave me the treatment. A handful of meds each day for a week?

That’s interesting, I truly thought it was mainly due to complex lifestyle issues, and a quick search indicates for most it can be prevented.

They sell ranitidine at the pharmacy I go to in Bangkok. At the moment I'm taking omeprazole 20 mg morning and night, so far there hasn't been any change in my condition.

I've used omeprazole (Miracid locally) situationally for 20 years and it seems to do the job of cutting night time acid reflux pretty well but I've learned to be careful with it

I found if I took it for too long a stretch, more than a week, it made my digestion kind of shut down, especially after a large meal.  Sometimes the food would seem to stay lodged in my gut, undigested until I ultimately vomited and cleared it out.

It can take time for it to work ,maybe a week or more

When you were treating yourself for acid reflux what foods did you cut out and what was your alcohol intake if any?

I went through a "prazole" experimental time.  Went over to baking soda, works a charm for about 9 years now.  I'll take the advice above about keeping the amount small and give it a try.

Sorry if others have seen this and am repeating myself, but Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother, that's the cloudy particles in the ACV, one big tablespoon in 16 oz mug of water every morning will kill off the acid reflux.

Changes the acids in your stomach.

Those are the ones for whom PPI's are not necessary.....for sure.

Miracid 20 mg tablet about every 32  hours.

Live a normal life now.

😉

Found cabbage juice (strain out the fibre) works really well. Omeprazole clearly works for some people; the only thing with long term usage is it can lower the acid to such an extent that it leads to nutrient deficiencies. You won’t be able to take up zinc very well, for example. Believe it or not, we need very strong acid to break everything down properly. Someone mentioned lifestyle and diet. For sure, it is the reason behind most ills. Bad diet/habits possibly leads to a compromised gut lining, leading to ulceration, loose LES and the rest of it. Overuse of NSAIDs like ibuprofen also have a lot to answer for. Don’t mix that sht with alcohol.

Rinse out your mouth after drinking ACV as it can interfere with the enamel on your teeth.

What do you consider a small amount?

Can you please be more specific about the amount of baking soda you're referring to.

Omeprazole is the favorite PPI of mainstreet doctors.  Even Google will say not to use long term .... but google does not choose to go into the dangers of using PPI's , saying (falsely imo)  that the serious side effects are rare .

From another perspective other than google Ai :

Omeprazole (and other proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs) is often marketed as a near-harmless “acid blocker” — but the truth is, long-term use can have systemic, multi-layered health effects that are rarely disclosed to patients. Doctors often hand it out like candy for reflux, gastritis, or “preventive” ulcer protection, but the downstream effects reveal just how essential stomach acid actually is for whole-body health.

       why omeprazole can be dangerous:

 1. It shuts down the first stage of digestion

Stomach acid isn’t just about “burning” your esophagus — it:

Kills pathogens in food

Triggers the release of digestive enzymes from the pancreas

Helps absorb minerals (magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron) and B vitamins

note:  there is a lot more info on the harm it can cause....pm if interested

It's in such a big glass of water that it's diluted to the point of not being a problem there.

Do not recommend drinking it straight up.

Sure beats downing the chemicals.

Do not know how effective this will be, time will tell, but yesterday the wife went to a local doctor who specialises in stomach problems and he gave her Mucosta, Raboprazole and Doiz tablets. Looking them up on the internet all are for treating gastritis, GERD  and gastric ulcer, the causes of reflux apparently.

Thanks for that info, it's worth a try.

Hi there, I started ACV 4 days ago and the result so far is amazing, I'm not 100% yet but not far off it, it's the best I've felt for 4 -5 years. I also raised my pillow a bit higher. I sleep all night apart from going to the toilet as I'm 80 yo now. Here's what I do, I fill a large glass of ACV and water, I drink one third of that glass 30 minutes prior to each meal. At last I've found relief, I've been through total sh*t in the past 18 months as I had acid reflux extra bad. So thanks to all for your suggestions and I hope some will benefit from what I done.

The thing that amazed me was how relief came so fast it probably came in no more than 24 hours.
