A 14-year-old boy was injured after an internet cable became entangled around his neck while he was riding a motorcycle in Pattaya, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle and crash into a grilled chicken store, resulting in significant damage to the trailer. The incident occurred on 2 January 2026 along Sukhumvit Road near Pattaya Soi 15, in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. Emergency responders provided immediate assistance before transferring the injured teenager to hospital for further treatment.

Rescue personnel from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Pattaya were alerted to the accident involving a motorcycle and a low-hanging internet cable. Upon receiving the report, officers rushed to the scene to assess the situation and assist the injured party. The location was a busy roadside area where overhead cables are installed along public roads.

At the scene, responders found a grey Honda PCX motorcycle, registration number 5 fromChonburi, with damage to its front section. The motorcycle rider had veered off course and come to rest against a Hat Yai grilled chicken trailer, causing damage. Nearby, the injured rider was found conscious but suffering from a neck wound and abrasions across his body.

The injured boy was identified as Mr Methasit, aged 14. Rescue workers administered first aid at the scene, focusing on treating his neck injury and stabilising his condition. He was then transported to Pattaya Patthakhun Hospital, where medical staff took over his care and carried out further examinations and treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the teenager had been riding through the area when an internet cable hanging unusually low across the roadway struck his neck. It was believed that a passing lorry may have caught the cable earlier, pulling it down to a dangerous height. As the motorcycle passed underneath, the cable became wrapped around the rider’s neck, violently pulling him from the bike.

The motorcycle subsequently lost control and crashed directly into the grilled chicken trailer. Fortunately, the store was closed at the time of the incident, preventing further injuries to staff or customers. No other road users were reported to have been harmed during the incident.

The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about the safety of overhead cables along major roads, particularly in areas with frequent heavy vehicle traffic. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the lowered cable were expected to follow, including checks on cable maintenance and responsibility. Officials were likely to coordinate with relevant service providers to prevent similar incidents in the future.

So if he was a couple of years older the internet cable would not be hanging low ?

Clearly the liability rests with the internet company.

or the truck that allegedly hit the cable and knocked it down might have had a higher than allowed load to hit the wire?

Quite possibly. If the truck was higher than a legally allowed height.

It seems mighty odd a news article like this doesn't even mention the laws broken prior the accident?

No one under 15 in Thailand is allowed to ride a motorbike and even 15 yo's must ride bikes under 110cc whereas this 14 yo was on a 150cc before he crashed.

Saw three on a motorbike yesterday; the driver looked about 8 neither of his passengers looked more than 12. Not a helmet between them. Seems the police are all concentrated at Sukhumvit on overtime; the helmet crackdown lasted three weeks.

The installation should have taken into account the height of vehicles that would be passing below it.

If he was a couple years older he might not have been breaking the law.

Ok, but irrelevant. The infractions you cite are not the cause of injury. Any motorcycle driver would have suffered a similar fate.

No. The dangerous condition is the defining cause of injury. A 50 year old wearing a helmet and the best road gear would have also been knocked off of a motorbike.

Well, that never happens here whistling

NBTC safety standard is to install telecom/internet at a minimum height of 5.5 meters or 18 ft on smaller Soi's.

After your done spitting out you coffee and laughing we can all agree maybe just provide a number that we can call and report dangerous cabling and they respond within 3 days would be helpful.

Heal up quick, just wish the city would put pressure on them more than about once a year.

I’ve just barely avoided 2-3 of these over the years here, taking a nasty whipping from one of them. That cable was down low for 2 more days before it was removed. I wonder how many others were hit by it?

Thais usually seem better at correction rather than prevention, but two days is a long time to allow such a danger to riders.

A 50 year old would be looking ahead for potential hazards whereas a 14 yo kid was thinking about his next w**k whilst looking at tok-tik on his phone! And probably speeding to boot.

You assume that. The old gits I see driving, especially the tourists on scooters, should not be driving.

14 year old driving motorbike, low hanging cables, grilled chicken store - tell me without telling me what country this happened in...

Have u ever tried getting any Thai person, or company to admit fault and / or pay damages...good luck with that

That PCX is less than one year old. Perhaps it was his 14th birthday present. The grilled chicken stall looks more damaged than the PCX. Hondas are very resilient. Bikes and cars can be fixed up very cheaply in Thailand.
