September 25, 20169 yr Been leaving my helmet on my bike for years now, (real helmet not too expensive around 3.000). Today in Central Westgate it got stolen, I guess it does happen at times. I am going to get one of those small combination locks with retractable cable. Lesson learned. I was going to replace it as it is a few years old.. maybe more then just a few. Still i hate thieves.. but I gave them the opportunity.
September 25, 20169 yr Why not just place the helmet eyelet on the hook under every bike I have seen?
September 25, 20169 yr Author I have a hook or something like that on my big bike but not on my scooter (Yamaha Nouvo 135). Normally I take my big bike but I wanted to buy something that was more easily transported on the scooter.

I think its hard to make it impossible to steal a helmet but just making it harder will do. It decreases the risk a bit. I did see a combination lock with retractable steel cable. That would work. I think ill get a PACSAFE RETRACTASAFE 250
September 26, 20169 yr I've left my Helmet on the (big) bike for years too without issues while a friend of mine got his stolen 3 times already. Last time they stole his helmet and not mine while our bikes were parked next to each other. I'm not sure why they didn't take mine that day... I have a feeling that they prefer to steal from scooters and cheap bikes like MSlaz etc. but of course can't prove that. I used Bilmola helmets which were quite cheap - one 2.5k, the other 6k iirc - but now that I bought a 13k Shark helmet, I'm not leaving it everywhere. Only in very open places with CCTV.
September 26, 20169 yr My old Bilmola helmet was stolen in a few minutes because I was too lazy to run my cable lock through it. The helmet was old so didn't care much, but riding with no helmet home made me feel unsafe. I sometimes notice my combo cable lock has been messed with in the most public places so no place is safe.
September 26, 20169 yr You lazy burgers take it with you l always do and if in Big'C' say Global or any shop for a while l give to girls at the returns desk or whatever it's called to take care of.
September 26, 20169 yr Same experience, left helmet at Chatuchak market for 5 minutes at bright daylight and many people around. Many times before already. Got stolen by some idiot...Luckily only 2,000 Baht Bilmola helmet. Lesson learned...Bought a new one from 2016 collection. Now I take it all time with me or deposit at the guard
September 26, 20169 yr Umm always take my helemt with me and always have here and in the UK, not that hard to carry are they?
September 26, 20169 yr Author From now on I will just run the pacsafe cable lock through it. Its not a major loss 2000-3000 and the helmet was old and I wanted to replace it. It was more the annoyance of having it stolen and having to ride home without a helmet.
December 18, 20169 yr That sucks! Sorry to hear that. Thieves are such scum bags. I'm very careful with my helmet. Either carry it or stick it in the top box. The top box is ugly but it sure is nice to lock away your gear and go inside a restaurant or mall without worrying about it. (Or lugging it around.) Experimented with the cable locks but what if it rains? And what about GIGANTIC SPIDERS?!?! ?

December 19, 20169 yr I would assume steel cable is safe for a certain while / at public places, right?

December 19, 20169 yr Ive been totally absent minded and left the keys in a rental big bike once or twice Always took the helmet with me though
December 19, 20169 yr Helmetlok brand style locks work good and if your helmet is a full face you can use the jacket cable that comes with the lock to go around the helmet's chin guard. It is a small light lock/cable combination that fits in a pocket. I use one for my big bike and PCX when I take the wife and we have two helmets. A good bicycle cable lock works good too but its extra hassle having to store it under the seat especially on big bikes that have little room.

Totally understand your apprehension about the top boxes. They sure are ugly! I used a giant pad lock around my chin bar before. Came out of a cafe and my helmet was twisted upside down with one of the cheek pads un snapped and hanging out. Obviously someone was tampering with it. I don't want their grubby hands on my gear. No more leaving it exposed for me.
December 19, 20169 yr Top boxes are great. Unless you're on a high-end Ducati I can't imagine being afraid to put one on because you mightn't look as cool.

Quite normal to see.. Thank you. I appreciate the compliment. I wouldn't put a top box on a ninja either but a scooter? Let's face it. Underbones are goofy looking anyways so you might as well go for function over style. I don't think a small box looks too bad. The beautiful thing is the box comes off with the press of a button if you want to have a cleaner look for the day. I take it inside every night. Can't imagine life without it. Another pic without box. Mount still there.
December 20, 20169 yr Top Boxes are great. Hold my rainsuit pack and backpack (if not too full), and then my jacket and open face helmet if not using my full face. Great to hop off, open it up, put your helmet and jacket into, lock, walk off forgetting about them.

Great to hop off, open it up, put your helmet and jacket into, lock, walk off forgetting about them. Agreed. I had a sport bike in the States and I would never dream of putting a box on it. But I also had a car that I used for grocery shopping and other things like that. If a motorbike is your only transportation then you really need the storage space. Daily life is a major hassle without it. Hanging shopping bags and worrying about your gear.
December 21, 20169 yr I actually bought a cheap helmet a Real and put my old cheap helmet on another bike and drove off.

I was wanting to get a sat nav in my helmet, if I did I would never leave it on the bike. Mrs Possum told me not to as it would just get stolen. I'm not sure if she meant just the helmet, or the part that remains on the bike.

Is that why so many Thai people don't have top boxes on their bikes? You see lots of them in Pattaya, but I believe these are bikes that are owned by westerners.
