webfact
Pattaya pushes ahead with 2.9 billion baht "mega project" development of Bali Hai Picture: Manager Online A public meeting in Pattaya chaired by deputy mayor Ronnakit Ekasingh was attended by 300 participants from the government and private sector. On the table after a study was completed is a mega-project costing almost 2.9 billion baht to develop the Bali Hai port area and part of Walking Street. The projects got the nod at the meeting and will now go forward to the Eastern Economic Corridor committee then the cabinet for approval. Picture: Manager Online The scheme has 3 main parts: 1. Building a cruise ship terminal and administrative building at the tip of the port. 2. Developing a recreation area on 15 rai of land, expanding the waterfront, building a department store, second boat pier, sky walk and passenger terminal for the light electric train project (that will connect with the proposed high speed train). 3. Developing a 38,000 square meter commercial area near Walking Street. A majority of participants at the meeting were in agreement with the plans that now await approval higher up. Manager said that the authorities in Pattaya were being proactive in developing the resort that like elsewhere in Thailand is suffering severely from the lack of foreign tourists due to the coronavirus pandemic. There use to be a shopping mall there; remember? It's the building where Mixx is now. Built by the Vientiane/julie Complex owners if I rememer corrently. It failed. That's why it became a nightclub complex...which was more successful.

JusticeGB
Maybe some people are worried that the people in office might be changing soon so spend on white elephants now to get commissions because the parties will be over soon. Half the shops and restaurants in Pattaya are closed now for lack of tourists so who has carried out any feasibility studies on this spending!

Only a very dumb tourism manager would like to attract cruise ships nowadays. The money is made on the cruise ships. Hoards of people go sightseeing on land between two meals on the cruise ship, buying a small bottle of mineral water while walking around or touring in organized groups.
