Contact tracing apps now COMPULSORY in Thailand - possible penalties for people not using them

What is the problem here ... you are tracked to death by CCTV (when they work) and Google yet when asked to download an App that might prevent further Covid transmissions or to tell you that you are at risk, a lot of you are saying you won't download it for whatever reason or can't because you don't have an Internet compatible phone which you can now get dirt cheap (as someone else pointed out) earlier in the thread.

I religiously use the ThaiChana App when going in and coming out of shops, s'markets etc, sanitise my hands every time I do that (sometimes up to three times a day), use the temperature machines etc etc etc. And I have now downloaded the MorChana App.

What is the big deal here ... invasion of privacy, an affront to personal choice or what? Who cares ... if it helps prevent more problems then so be it. I for one want to start living a normal life thank you and will do anything to make that happen.

  • There is no excuse not to own one these days. They can be had for as little as 1-2k thb If people can not afford that, then they can't afford to be here in Thailand

  • What about those who can't afford a smartphone and/or do not know how to use them? Does the government supply free phones now, or offer classes, how to use them?

It's not about being a "good boy" it's about not being stupid!

Example Singapore, they provide tokens for everybody for free who does not have a smartphone or cannot run a corresponding application. These tokens provide the same functionality and this is going on for months now. Thailand government instead of coping with such real problems talks about flying to the moon or purchasing submarines. Go figure.

At present certainly, it's unclear whether it will stay that way, also see my earlier post with the link to Matichon.

A fairly garbled Google translation, but I think the gist of it is, as you say, MorChana (Doctor Won is the literal translation) is not now a prescribed app. But for a foreigner, 1000 THB or so for a cheapie phone is not a huge price to pay to get in step, surely! They do have other uses!

If you do not own a smart phone  you will be prosecuted and banged up so they can track and trace you

I assume these apps require an Internet connection to log in/out of places.
What happens in the case of not having an Internet connection on my phone?
I use wifi for Internet on my phone at home.

You are asking logical questions....this will anger certain people that make decisions like these....these are people that got their job because of who their mummy and daddies are...not what they know.

Does anyone remember the BREAKING NEWS that all foreigners were going to be 'given' the smart wristbands to check our temperature, blood pressure, alcohol content, favourite beer, etc etc? That never happened either, did it?

Tell me more.

Even though the app doesn't work. I was erring on the side of caution.

Well I guess that means most of the Thai population are now considered criminals as Google play store shows only 500k+ have downloaded the Mor Chana app. Not even 1 million. And Thai Chana only has 1m+ downloadeds.

Considering everyone in Thailand uses the line app, it should be OK as it works through the scanner on the line app too. So dont even have to install any extra apps if you have line.

Didn't want to install it onto my main phones, so I gave it a go on Nokia 3310 I found in the drawer. Won't take it. Am I a criminal now?

Only if the Nokia belongs to someone else

I have visited one place where their shop code didn't work. Informed the owner. Every other place I visited the app or code worked.

Sorry but I can afford to get linked to the internet on my phone.  I don't want to!  I use the internet on a laptop at home.  The rest of the time I don't need to be bothered or tracked.  I keep track of where I am so do not need tracking.

I thought that sim cards have to registered to the owner . if you turn on location they could track and trace from that . Or am I completely wrong ?

I use the LINE app to scan the QR codes to check in and out of stores. Does the Thai Chana app do more than this?

My phones a few years older than that and the app works.

wouldn't it be better, if you stayed at home a bit more, and stopped moving around spreading disease?

I gathered the idea of the MorChana app was to use bluetooth (not confirmed clearly) to be able see if you rubbed noses with anyone who who is suspected of having covid.

They've already retracted this:

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Looks like they are going to cancel the rule that people travelling in the five provinces must have the Mor Chana app. Apparently they just realized that not everyone has a smartphone and so not fair to penalise them for this #COVID19 #โควิด19 #Thailand

What if I instal it on my tablet which never leaves the house?

You may struggle to check-in and out of locations.

I registered and  I said I have not been around any dirty foreigners and have only scratch my own ass in the last few days. Then the app won't open. I guess next they will come and put barb wire around my house. I hope they leave me pool access
