Pattaya suffers 99% fall in tourist arrivals

The latest figures released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Pattaya office make for grim reading for anyone involved in the city’s tourism industry.

According to TAT, data released on Wednesday revealed that tourist arrivals to the city have plummeted almost 99% from one year ago

TAT said that just 26,000 tourists arrived in the city in January, staying at  least one night. By comparison, some 1,5 million tourists stayed in Pattaya during the same period last year.

TAT director Kajorndet Apichartrakul said the plunge in arrivals was due to COVID-19, restrictions on travel  and of course the lack of foreign tourists, who account for 70% of all arrivals in the city.

Mr Kajorndet said that Russian account for the largest group of holidaymakers to Pattaya but they were not able to visit this year in any significant numbers.

Mr Kajorndet said that despite the desperate state of the tourism industry in Pattaya, he told Manager that he was optimistic about the future, saying that TAT is planning a number of promotional campaigns that should help to boost hotel occupancy.

That probably equates to 18 million, 16 million of which arrive on a Chinese tour bus and spend nothing

Pattaya  , another family friendly holiday destination ?

There are better places for families ...

Pattaya was once known as the ' sin ' city . That reputation kept it famous .

Make Pattaya the thai ' Las Vegas ' , with casinos , gambling , strippers and late night shows ...

That would bring in the yuans and a lot of other currencies as well .

In a way I wonder if I should be grateful that Thailand have protected me so well from those so foolishly in denial.

Is that a big spending Thai domestic tourist in the OP photo, or a homeless Thai?  Hard to tell the difference.

Never fear Pipat is here, he has a cunning plan.... almost weekly.

I am so sorry.  Oh yes, this place is probably in a technical depression.  But, since I live here am really enjoying some of it tremendously and will never forget this time.  Some of the greatest, sexiest, prettiest girls I have ever met.  The greatest female company in my life actually wanting so much attention. Unfortunately,  their sponsors stuck in the (you cannot leave) UK or AUS. or where ever have decided to stop taking care so...

Well thats the understatement of the year

Where has this guy been hiding

On the bright side things can only get better

First question springing to mind: Where did this 1% come from ? Pattaya might even consider itself lucky

As much unused space in the city as the page layout on this web page.

I think it's a lot worse than we know a lot more business's are on the edge they just need that final push,

Right now this weekend we have 6 family members down here in Phuket for a few days holiday they got a good deal I think also with the government subsidy Half Half,

They are staying in a well known 5 star hotel, Im not going to name them,

Our family have said the food and drink in the hotel is soooo expensive and it's ++Vat last night they didn't want to eat in the hotel but needed a minivan it was double the price, My wife arranged a minivan for them but it was not allowed to enter the hotel they had to walk out to the main road.

This hotel is closing down in the next week or so and maybe re open October,

I think these hotels and the Taxi's need to re evaluate themselves if they want people to come back, I know my family wont come back to that hotel and what happens.......? they go back to BKK and tell all their family and friends to stay away from there and how expensive it was.

I believe some of the top Pattaya Hotels are making an offer whereby a weekend booking is rather a high price, but that price is credited and can be spent in the hotels restaurants. Pattaya is different in that the City's Hotels have plenty of places to eat just outside, within walking distance.

No worries!  Read it in the news that TIT is expecting 6,000,000 Brits IN ADDITION TO another 10,000,000 visitors from other countries by the second half of this year!

That's Pirate Island. (Phuket)

Price gouging right to the end, then wondering what went wrong.
