Thailand reported 401 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, a huge surge in new cases compared to previous weeks.

Of the new cases, 337 were local transmissions, while 18 were imported from people entering quarantine. 46 others were found from  contact tracing.

A further 103 people were discharged from hospital having made a full recovery.

1,419 people remain in hospital or held in a migrant worker quarantine centre.

1 more death was also reported.

Most of the new cases are linked to an outbreak at immigration detention centres in Bangkok at Bang Khen and Suan Plu.

Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 28,277 with 92 deaths.

Suan Plu, ie the IDC. Cramped conditions to say the least. Would have been a good idea to give everyone there a jab of Chinese vaccine some months ago. Now it's too late.

Thai government encourages people to travel this Songkran

even, if the majority were in detention centers, still it looks like there is also rise in clusters spread from bank kae markets.

And, of course, prison guards are at risk. As with burmese workers in samut sakhon, those infected are not necessarily separated from the negatives.

Over the past 24 hours, 337 new local cases were confirmed through active case-finding and 46 others were found at hospitals.

The vast majority of the 337 new cases diagnosed through mass testing – 318 – were at the immigration police detention facility in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district. Five other community cases were detected in Bangkok, twelve in Samut Sakhon province and two in Nakhon Pathom.

Testing at hospitals confirmed 29 new cases in Bangkok, nine in Nakhon Pathom, five in Samut Sakhon and one each in Khon Kaen, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi.

337+18=355 yet there were 401 cases reported. There are 2 categories local and imported. Those found by contact tracing are apparently neither locally transmitted or imported.

The more healthy people tested, the better the numbers look.

Also, in some countries, people who never tested positive for it have been listed as dying of COVID (underlying causes). Different countries use different 'methodologies'.

Complicated.

Testing is being done, so that is a good thing.

Below is from a government hospital at Silom. Around the building was a long line of people.

How they can be linked?

Someone who ends up in immigration detention centre, doesn't enter Thailand again any time soon

Hello from Switzerland. I was in quarantine from 11 to 26 January in BKK.

Of the new cases, 337 were local transmissions, while 18 were imported from people entering quarantine. 46 others were found from  contact tracing.

It's strange that there is 18 people new covid-19 when entering quarantine, because if you travel by plane from other countries YOU MUST have RT-PCR covid-19 test NEGATIVE.

Yes, but you could have contracted it after the test.

Hopefully the government won't be panicked into having another lockdown! If it wasn't for social media hyperbolizing the situation, few would be bothered and life could go on as normal.

I don't think Thai people need a test.

IDC was an accident waiting to happen. Just as the cramped lodgings and work conditions of migrant workers in the seafood industry were.

Apparently 297 out of the 337 cases were at IDCs. So non-IDC cases just 40. Plus the 46 found on contact tracing = 86 cases of local transmission not counting the IDC outbreaks. In line with recent trends.

In the Bangkok Post they do list from which countries they came from, but not their nationality. If they were all Thais then they are not required to have a Covid test prior to flight. Other nationalities could have tested negative, but contracted the virus afterwards. The system is not foolproof, hence the continued need for quarantine.

Nothing connected with the protests against the Govt in the capitol at the weekend then.?

Keep mass-testing with the utterly flawed PCR method, and you'll get the numbers of false-positives required to shutdown protests and keep people scared.

did the air crew ? Or the immigration staff ? Or was the plane cleaned before use  ?

Too many chiefs, too many vested interests. Bound to happen sooner or later, if any of the new extremely infectious variants makes it to Thailand, it is done for.

Thailand records 401 new COVID-19 cases today, Health Minister claims no third wave

Thailand today recorded 401 new COVID-19 cases, including a cluster of 318 infections among illegal immigrants held at Suan Plu and Bang Khen detention centres, the CCSA announced today (Tuesday).

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul maintains, however, that the current surge in new cases is not a sign of a third wave of infections, but just cluster infections and that the situation is under control.

Of the new cases, 383 are locally-acquired infections, including 337 found during proactive screening in communities.
