The House Budget Scrutiny Committee is likely to put the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) plan to purchase two more Yuan-class submarines from China, at an estimated cost of 22.5 billion baht, on hold for a year.

Mr. Wirat Rattanaseth, a party-list MP from the ruling Palang Pracharat party and vice chairman of the House committee, said today (Sunday) that both opposition and government MPs oppose the RTN’s use of taxpayers’ money, to procure two more submarines, at a time when it could be put to better use.

The procurement plan is now pending with the House Procurement Subcommittee and will be sent back to the House Budget Scrutiny Committee for consideration on Monday.

I should think so,  the Idea should be scraped for ever,  the 22.5 billion Baht would & should be better spent feeding the poor....

Even if delayed for a year, I would suggest 22.5 billion would be better spent on the economy in 2022 than buying a sub from the self same people that just destroyed your entire economy !

Shelved before a sub-committee has been formed wow! better things to spend it on like tear gas rubber bullets and water cannons right now by the look of BKK ????

I think one being parked in front of the aircraft carrier and one behind it would make a better sightseeing attraction.

Take it a step further and strip the Admiral of rank that requisitioned these subs.  Totally insensitive of the Thai people in these times much less not being needed at all!

Does Thailand have a fully trained submarine crew complete with shore based back up and facilities.?

Just dump the idea all these Sub committees are wasting even more government money,

Im not an expert but I did read the waters around Thailand are to shallow for a sub to be effective

True for the gulf which has a depth of about 80 meters max so they would be confined to the deep waters on the Andaman side.

I'd buy it and park it in front of the house and swimming pool.... And keep the red plates for a while.

So we get the Navy running the country?

If this deal was quashed, it would be good news.

However, I think it would not take the wasters too much time to come up with another hair brained Scheme to empty the coffers.

They have spent billions on a submarine base with requisite training facilities.

But didn't they build it inland by mistake ? ????

Even a buffalo is smart enough to delay this idiotic purchase.

But don't worry, they'll be back.

Deeper, slower, more expensive.

I was born in 57.  Was a space kid. Grew up enamored with Mercury, Gemini, Apollo.  I have seen the space shuttles takeoff and land, and touched two of them.  Got multiple degrees, worked in aerospace since 1982 and still contracting with and for the Government. Space has its uses.  But space is mostly a dead end.  People can not live there without massive amounts of imported things.  Some zero gravity research may yield some interesting things.  But besides communication, and surveillance, environmental and of course military applications, most countries don't need to put much money into it.

If true, then some government and private officials are going to be missing out on a lot of kickback money.

The budget committee should also consider serious reduction in the number of Generals and saved billions that can be used for the current crisis.

Maybe that is where they shipped their aircaftless aircraft carrier to. By some reports its disappeared of the radar, literally, or at least its transponders have been turned off.
