Thailand reports 17,345 new COVID-19 cases and 117 deaths

I heard this morning that health care experts are predicting that in two weeks time 1/2 of Myanmar will be infected. Herd immunity without vaccination in a country where the health care system has virtually collapsed and doctors and nurses are being beaten and arrested by a dictorship. A true humanitarian disaster happening next door.

To think that a peak may have happened here is beyond wishfull thinking when they're talking about numbers approaching 30,000,000 in Mynamar in two wks time. I must stress again that because of a third world testing regime here numbers are far from reliable and it also means that only symptomatic and I would imagine a very low % of asymtomatic people are being found. The numbers here must and I repeat must be substantially higher than reported.

Vaccines. A country needs 70-80% fully vaccinated. This will not happen here until late nxt yr possibly going into 2023.

I mentioned on another thread yesterday the possibility of a coup d'etat followed by martial law and a heavy lockdown. This possibilty I believe cannot ruled out.

There you go then. All gloom and not a hint of sunshine because in my opinion this reflects the reality of the moment.

They will be fudging the numbers to ensure the reopening can happen.

Letting everyone know the true extent of the problem will scupper the reopening and cause the govt to lose face.

If and when that happens the genie will be truly out of the bottle as far as folks coming in double vaccinated and returning home infected after coming into contact with an unvaccinated individual who was covid positive such as the Taxi driver I reported on earlier in the thread.  Sad state of affairs that has been created.  Now if 70 percent were truly and completely double vaccinated why not take that risk, yet as we stand now, well...yes I am shaking my head in disbelief.

The latest restrictions for entry to Phuket starting from 3rd August. Basically, local tourists can no longer enter but the #PhuketSandbox continues. In related news, the 7+7 plan where sandboxers could leave Phuket early on sealed routes, is being delayed #โควิดวันนี้ #Thailand

It's not about being optimistic.

It's about timing and compassion.

I don't think Monty Pythons "Bring Out Your Dead" sketch would get many laughs at the moment.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous.  How does expressing some hope that today's slightly lower figures may mark (note: "may") the peak have any bearing on compassion.  What do you hope for?  Hopefully you don't hope that the figures start increasing again; that wouldn't be very compassionate.

Let's hope the slight decline in cases, and the more dramatic drop in deaths, continues.  Maybe we've passed the peak after all.

good to see you have a measure on the situation far beyond what the rest of us numpties have

You don't "hope" I'm right?  That's sad.

There is hope. and then there is denying science and the evidence of your own eyes and ears.

sometimes it is better to be serious about getting a job done and making things better, than deluding ones self. Hope isn’t going to get anybody anywhere at the moment, rolling sleeves up and doing what is necessary in whatever way we can, is what is going to count.

The data for this is from NBT World Twitter account and was from itsskh.com previously (Sisaket Hospital). Yesterday there were 251 cases (and climbing) - a lot for a low population density. Time to stop focusing on 18yo in Bangkok and deliver more vaccines to the old/sick in Issan?

Still not sure if the Phetchabun cases have been added or if they ever will.  Hiding cases behind the Rapid Antigen test is also a farce, and the people in this country know the truth as it stares them in the face daily with family cases growing at a staggering rate.  Soon many communities will be told they must be locked in for fear of it spreading further.  The problem is it is already spreading everywhere and the only way to slow the spread is to vaccinate people.  Just read a story of someone who had been an Antivaxxer elsewhere becoming sick and now being on a ventilator.  He believed all of the Antivaxxer rhetoric and now wishes he did not.  Other stories of people disguising themselves as they get vaccinated and are hiding the facts from family members who are antivaxxer as well in order to protect themselves.

I had a thought about the Phutchabun 3000. Detected with Rapid Antigen tests? I think that was the case. Then they would do PCR tests to confirm which they couldn't do in one day and as positives come up they are added to the daily total rather than it happening in a block. Just a thought.

I think you've been listening to too much ELO.

It’s a logical thought. But yesterday Petchabun had 74 cases I believe. So processing in batches of 50 or so? Seems low.

I see Thaland has the second largest new cases. I think the new cases per capita may make it first

Let's hope some ends up with front line health workers. Didn't they receive 2 Sinovac shots. A booster Pfizer for them would be good news.

About an hour ago I saw a large military helicopter heading over the top of the condo en-route to what looked like the Suvarnabhumi area, but could have just been on a training flight,  However,  I wonder if they will be loading the doses aboard and flying them to the locations where they will be vaccinating the first responders and medical staffs urgently.

These daily numbers scare me and others. According to new laws such reports are not allowed anymore. Or did I not understand this correctly?!

Yes, I guess I am a hopeful optimist. This daily thread soon puts a stop to that though!

I hope that isn’t the case Brewster. However much further there is to go in this phase of the pandemic, it will come to an end. We all process these things differently. Personally I like to gather as much information as possible and mentally map out a path that I expect to happen, whilst taking note of factors that may alter that path. I find that helps me.

your own optimism and desire for wide ranging debate is another way, at least I think it is. Keep your optimism, but posts of blind hope are bound to get push back from analyst types. I think I would be right in saying that nobody wants to stop you being optimistic when they inject realism into the conversation.

I personally am optimistic, tough times are ahead, made worse by some poor policy decisions, but they will work out in the end.

Finally overtaken Malaysia. Thailand has been trailing them for quite a while.

Difficult to see this trailing away like the morning mist the way Prayut keeps trying to suggest.

I might though, but not like morning mist, much more like a lethal wildfire.

There was some discussion of the handling of the Pfizer doses in a MoPH document the other day that I clipped to save, as follows:

It does not seem long ago, when I last looked, they were well below Malaysian numbers..... and it does not look like Malaysian numbers are falling.

Don't believe that's completely clear. Perhaps someone can add detail.

Personally I do think few recent pics of folk being attended to on streets looked possibly staged. If that was found to be the case then that would need to be investigated and prosecuted.
