a full U.K pension,

Is your pension going to stay a FULL UK pension Michael..?   or will it be reduced for someone not residing in the UK..... If you mean it to stay as a full pension, and when you joined you gave your correct name......I would go back and rejoin as Mr Arbarkle or something..............:coffee1:

BTW....why did you pick BKK as a retirement location.

It depends if you like the hottest young and pretty gogo dancers or if you accept those old women who are already 20 years in that business.

  • That is about 30,000 b a month.  What is your desired lifestyle?  You okay living like a semi bum in a lousy condo box far away from activities and conveniences?  What are your hobbies, plans, etc.?

In Bangkok the life is more expensive than living in the woods. Nobody can give you real data if your money is enough or not.

Because it depends heavily on lifestyle. There are expense factors like: food, drinks, living and girls.

All of this factors can change the range very much. if all factors go to the minimum then you will not have a problem with 30'000 baht for sure.

Don't listen to the naysayers. You have twice what you need for an enjoyable retirement.

PM me for my bank info.

Can I ask why BKK? I would suggest BKK is most expensive place to live in Thailand, your savings will go a lot further elsewhere in Thailand. Saying that, if you screw the nut and dont get taken for any Thai scam, you should have enough to have a reasonable standard of living.

your health issues will be a problem in the coming years and insurance will be too expensive if you can get it.the heat of bangkok will exsaserbate health issues.many brits go home for health treatment esp cancer and dementia ,,parkys syndrome ...so leave that door open

once over 70 its all downhill healthwise

Has the Op  been to Thailand before?.Cant see him mention that in his original post. Some prior knowledge of surroundings can help in budgeting forecasts

I came here before there were any websites or forums to ask any advice,

just did it, worked out, sometimes it's best not to think too much and just

do it, you can always go home and live on your pension.

good luck

You'll be fine ! Are you going to use the 800k or  the monthly deposits for your Non B  visa ?

Living in Bkk is a little bit more expensive compared to most cities in Thailand !

About your savings ! Go slow and test the waters !

I'm still trying to figure out which ones were born as a female. I'm guessing two of them.

First time poster.

A bit of a dolt considering the lack of movement and even fun.

Wind up

Yes, enough.

Maybe you spend too much time with boys or alone or it's just your imagination.

I am a 66 year old British male hoping to retire in Bangkok in 2022. I have 220,000GBP in savings and a full U.K pension, is this enough for a non smoker and very light drinker?

All replies and suggestions are welcomed.

You will get a mix of answers to this question, but as the girls say. "Up to you" on what you do in the end.  At 66-70 years of age, my question to you is........Why Bangkok??   I worked in Bangkok for 2 years - when I retired, I moved to Jom Tien, Pattaya..  It''s a much better laid back way of life and if you want crazy??  It's right down the road in Pattaya.   For us older folks, the stresses of living in Bangkok can be taxing on our bodies, unhealthy air, stress, traffic, cost of living - trying to juggle the pennies, high rents (forget buying until you have been in country at least 5-10 years - or never).  I find the living in the south coast a lot less stressful than the city, and if it's companionship you desire, it's there, just like the city.   Be honest with yourself, is it the nightlife you want, or do you want to live out your life without stress.  In any event, the choice is yours, I have been associated with Thailand since 1972, owned and sold a bar, bought a condo, spent millions(?) of baht over my lifetime and still live here.............just not in Bangkok.

moved to Jomtien

I have always been a fan of Jomtien for the exact reasons you state here. I've lived in Bangkok, Chonburi City, a short while in a village up north, but the bulk of my time has been in Jomtien. Close enough to any action you might have a hankering for, but quiet even in "normal" times.

Yeah probably my imagination remembering how the go-go girls looked in the mid eighties early nineties when they were still natural beauties, sleek, small breasted sweeties with long black hair and beautiful smiles. That was before the tattooed eyebrows, nose jobs, boob implants, braces, dyed hair and body tattoos came on the scene. With the modifications the girls do now they don't look natural so its easy to confuse them with katoeys.

Obviously I understand your objections to tattooed eyebrows, nose jobs, boob implants and body tattoos. But braces? Braces are just cute. ????

With that much money I could live 4 lifetimes in LOS. Of course I wouldn't buy property, cars, gold etc  for any women, and I'd stick to renting houses and women.

Whatever, keep the 800,000 in a seperate untouched account, and put aside enough for medical insurance for the rest of your life. Then divide the balance ( allowing for inflation ) between the number of years you think you will survive. That's your rent.

Keep the pension for living expenses. Life in LOS without money is <deleted>.

She's far too pretty to rent. IMO pretty women consider themselves worth more than what they are.

IMO you are wrong. However, there's only one of that lot I'd even consider worth it.

I think 100,000 k a month is about right to enjoy a proper retirement lifestyle in Bangkok.

Seriously?

The two in the front and one in the middle at the back would certainly tempt me to give up my single life, but the problem being that the funds I have saved, would probably disappear in record time!!

As far as the OP's post goes, IMO he would be better off renting a nice little apartment and taking it easy in the bars and on the bar girls!

IMO look closely enough and one can see the baht in their eyes.

Which is more than twice my monthly rent in a very nice hotel in Chiang Mai near the night market.

Live in UK on £180 a week, I think not.

So then he would have say Bht 15000 for the month = Bht 500 a day. Great!

Short term rental to exercise the ferret wouldn't break the bank!

I was never into that. I preferred the girlfriend experience.

I would think so. You can probably live on the pension alone, if you don't go too berserk and/or find the wrong woman. But I don't have a full UK pension so don't know.

Capital? I read somewhere 60/40 split. Which is what I intend to do. 60% invest , 40% keep liquid.

Some British banks don't like non-residents holding accounts. Maybe someone else will elucidate.

Lloyds has an expat/offshore account as do others

there is no real answer to this question. It depends entirely upon your background and what you used to. I have very many wealthy expat friends. They employ a gardener, a maid and a driver. They eat expensive food and wine. They travel abroad once a year and so on. But I also have friends who live very well while avoiding all expats and live in a nice Thai environment, they don'T spend much money.

More than enough to eat and have a couple of drinks with. Not enough for a night at the gogo.
