My wife and I were once set upon while driving M/C on a dark jungle road at 11pm, 5 men jumped out from the trees waving bars and a machete, we were very lucky it was only the bike that got hit as I managed to drive off, very long story cut short, the only charge they got was damaging the M/C.

When the police graciously arrived NEXT morning, they found the weapons dropped on the road and did EXACTLY as in this photo, PICKED THEM UP With bare hands without a thought of finger prints. The perbs were construction workers from a neighbouring country and only 2 got deported. The locals were very supportive when they heard about this (it was the first time anything like this had happened on that road and they had families that lived on it), and a few times after, the local security bloke would escort us home from the village even in daylight. RTP stop destroying evidence with your ignorance JEEZ.

I had a similar incident here on Pattaya's Darkside, I was driving my motorbike late one night on a small dark street in the middle of nowhere and came across a bunch of branches blocking the road.  I naturally stopped and in the couple of seconds of me trying to figure out what's going on, a guy jumps out from some shrubs behind me and hits me across the back with a large stick.  I immediately drive over the branches and get the hell out of there.  no major injuries so I went to the local police box to report this assault and the cop says "you big man, no problem",  <deleted>? I tell him and the small gathering of Thais "Yes I big, but maybe next time it's old man or lady".  I convince the gathering to go check it out and we find the branches now off to the side of the road.  I learned my lesson, don't drive on dark streets late at night and don't stop if something suspicious pops up.

I agree.

But I've been guilty of trying to "save" the day also.  Only to be admonished by my wife saying, "Stop it, he might have a gun".

I get the same comment just for sounding my horn when driving plus lock the doors.

This guy does nothing for portraying a good image of Thailand and a potential tourist destination. The good and honest people of Thailand need and deserve to be seen in a "good light" They should make an example out of this guy and chop off his head for attacking a foreigner!!!

That's going to get foreigners a great reputation as spineless.

Better spineless than dead. I learn farang never win in Thailand.

Better to have some integrity and bravery, IMHO. What about other crimes, does this attitude apply? For example, if someone is getting raped or murdered.

My experience is that I over more than 10 years in Thailand many times confirmed that the news control how people see the world. We all know that if you read things  too many times you start to believe it stands for the majority. In reality the bad things you read about does not even represent 1 %.

If it now is like you say, that you seen a lot. Yeah, it´s probably same there. First it seems like you happen to be where it happens, and then you chose to remember the bad things you see, and forget that you see more good things. It´s a common reaction, but you have to remember that you should see the light instead of darkness.

I have almost 20-years experience (20-years next month), and we are talking about the conflict seeking group of Thai men, in general don't challenge them in any way...????

We probably all meet lots of polite smiling Thais...????

This was what I quoted from start:

Scary stuff, Thais usually to react that way even the worse of them, that guy must have been really peed off seeing someone filming him...

I do not see any kind of group represented. Just a way to drag all Thais into one negative box. Things that seasoned posters in this forum have perfected up to a professional level.

"Group" is a generalization, not specific to the case reported in the news, group is the kind of conflict seeking Thai males easily loosing face for whatever reason...????

Depend on situation, obviously, with drugged or drunk Thais  involved you risk being shot or maimed by a machette. One on one with no weapons involved maybe assist.

My wife does the same thing if I blow the horn

Is there really any difference between those crimes and this one?

Well, there kinda is actually, having said that. I'd rather take on a Somsak weilding a 4 inch Cheese Bite than a 24 inch machete - that's for sure.

Apples to oranges, mate.

I was blowing horns with this Thai guy today cos he tailgated me.

So satisfying. Glad the wife wasn't there; she doesn't like blowing horns.

I usually just take me foot off the gas a gradually slow down.

If this guy is driving so close that he is gonna hit me, I want to be going slower, lol. Also, it doesn't reward his bad behaviour.

Usually they just overtake really close then blow the horn.

It all depends on the situation, someone breaking into a gasoline machine doing only financial damages is different from a rape and a murder.

I try to avoid fighting and problems if I can. Walking away is the best defense no need to prove myself.

Also interfering between Thais is not something I would do as you (probably not you you speak reasonable Thai) would often have no clue who is at fault and what is happening. Plus if you get in a lovers fight both might turn on you (as my police friend has often told me).

I have never ever been in a dangerous violent situation with Thais. The people i know also haven't, except one guy but he only tells tall tales.

Potentially something similar happened to me .

I was in the mountains around Chiang rai and Chiang Sean was was walking the ten kilometers back to the village from the main road , passing a few other villages in the process .

Whilst walking through one village , there were a group of Thai guys drinking the local moonshine and they asked me where I was going and I told them that I was walking to the next village .

When I was about one kilometer out of town, in the wilderness , five of the guys drove past me on motorbikes and stopped their bikes about 100 meters in front of me .

Try gently pulling your hand brake, no lights, to slow for a bend, that will really confuse 'em. Taught to me by a rally driver.

Unless there is a friend or family member involved, I wouldn't get involved in any Thai altercations.

I feel a bit sorry for the Scottish guy that got injured, thankfully it sounds like he wasn't too badly hurt. If you're going to film someone committing criminal acts, it's probably best to have an exit strategy available. A car, reliable cardiovascular fitness, or incredible martial arts skills. ????
