Nothing but an empty shell was left after one of billionaire inventor Elon Musk's electric cars went up in flames in Thailand.

The red plate (brand new) Tesla Model 3 worth 4 million baht had collided with a power pole opposite the PT gas station at kilometer marker 55 southbound on Rama 2 in Samut Songkhram province, reported Sanook.

Luckily the high voltage power lines did not come down - the pole only bent.

The driver Pheeranat was taken to Mahachai Mae Klong hospital with minor collision injuries.

The media reported that he had tried to avoid an accident scene where a car and motorcycle collided.

It took more than an hour for firemen with three fire engines to extinguish the blaze that was centered on the lithium batteries in the underside of the expensive car.

This, as a firemen at the scene observed was harder than putting out a fuel fire. The Tesla had to be put on its side to get to the battery fire underneath and put it out.

Fire in electric cars is a serious problem to handle and requires special knowledge and equipment, which the fire brigades should have when number of electric vehicles surge.

In my Scandinavian home country we have a high number of electric vehicles, and fires in same. The procedure is the following...

The only way to reduce the fire is to immerse the burning car in water or cool with large amounts of water, thereby cooling the battery but not extinguishing the fire. The battery must burn out until the fire material has been used up.

Special container filled with water for fire in electric vehicles...

The electric vehicle is moved to the container...

It's all about advertising yourself; being a show pony to let others know (or think) you are rich and successful.  It's narcissistic of course and there are countless wa####s in this world who do it.  "Look at me, look at me".  Especially in a country so polarized with a poverty element.

Anyone who buys a new expensive car in this country with the insanely high import tarrifs has got to have more dollars than sense or so desperate for attention.

Fresh water is not a good conductor. If one wishes to neutralize/discharge lithium cells it is necessary to add salt to the water.

Or add salt to the wound...

No, the joke is someone bringing up the irrelevant subject of US car prices on vehicles bought in Thailand...every single time!

With all the world's governments telling the plebs that EV only is in their future - said governments need to get with the program and provide the infrastructure to accomdate EVs.  Like charging stations, sufficient electricity, and first responders with the equipment and know-how to extinguish EV battery fires.  Flaming cars will become the norm in 2030.

What happened in this case? Does anyone have the current news?

It was the nut behind the wheel, a critical part that often causes tragic accidents. Leave it to Somchai to crash a self-driving car!

Thailand seems to have a problem with lamp-posts and electicity-post jumping out in front of cars which are being driven sedately down the street.  They need to fix this !

Agreed

so the current update,  some bright spark in charge,  got the shock of his life when he came in contact with a power pole.  He has been taken for a check-up and could receive extra charges of assault & battery, however he may be discharged shortly, watt ever is the case.

Imagine the carnage and damaged buildings if Thailand finally buries all its cables and there are no posts to slow drivers down when they can't stay on the road. One dead in the car, six dead who were sitting outside their house having a quiet cup of tea.

Petrol car the best and always will be in my life time.

Trash got burnt and has fullfilled his purpose.
