Before - So.....there you are at the check-out. The woman in front of you has had all her items checked and the cashier is waiting for payment.

To the woman customer, it seems a total surprise. She has to delve into her over-loaded hand-bag, find her wallet and select the notes she wants to use. Should she give a thousand Baht note and get change, or try and pay with all the smaller notes she has accumulated?

Customers behind her are visibly getting impatient.

 

Now - Pays via her telephone. This takes 10 times longer than paying in cash. Customers behind her (me) are getting totally hacked off as she doesn't ever get it right the first time. A 10 minute wait is not unusual.

 

What are the advantages of paying this way? You may think that it's safer because she doesn't have to carry cash. But, this just isn't true. Noodle shops, food carts and the majority of other shops cannot do electronic payment, so she does carry cash, especially for those snacks she'll buy on her way home.

 

So......what the h3ll is the point?

Point your phone at the QR code by the checkout, type in the amount and it's done.

A lot of street carts also display QR codes since COVID.

 

Home Mall have removed all their ATMs and ask you to pay by QR code.

They prefer not to take cash payments.

Well, over the years, for me ANY store takes longer to get out of than it did doing the shopping.

Always people waiting, always an issue, finding money , counting money, item wrong, no code, no price and so on.Cant remember ever having an easy flow through.

 

Supermarket staff, why do you have to beep every single item that is the same, why not X 12 or whatever, noooooo, one by one.Then count the money going in 4 times atleast, then count the change anothrr 4 timrs atleast.

Makro, wait for the 20 yr old dot matrix printers to spew out the receipt.

 

The above are just observations of typical issues.

I have never, ever seen an electronic payment that was faster than cash.

Your post raises an interesting point. Maybe it's the retailers that want you to pay by that method and pressure you to do so.

Sounds like someone is embellishing their point.  Just today the wife and I were out and needed to fill the empty tank, gas station attendant filled it and showed my wife the amount due, she pulled up her banking app and paid in about 30 seconds.  The same goes when she shops at the morning open markets. 

I'm just glad supermarket shoppers don't whip out their check books anymore. That was an eye-roller for those of us behind them.

it could be worse  .....   she could be paying with food stamps .

You have not seen someone pay with a Garmin watch apparently. I have to press 2 buttones while waiting in line, then I just hold the watch in front of the gadget, it beeps after 1 sec and done. Same with Googlepay. Some people dont know how to use it properly, some people have to type in pins. With Garmin you enter the pin on the watch once a day and are all set. If you take the watch off you have to reenter the pin again (checked via Heartrate sensor) . Biggest plus is you can never forget your watch if you never take it off  like me and dont have to look for your mobile????

@KarenBravo Sounds like you were stuck behind my wife, so I apologise. Normally I am shopping with her and I join all the other customers giving her filthy looks and tutting.

Not to speak about the guard at the exit - just another 5 m - who will recheck the receipt whether it complies with the goods in the cart.

Before you " point your phone"...What do you do? Open an app presumably. Which app? If so you must log on to the internet first..using the7/11 wifi or your own data? If WiFi who supplies the wifi connection and how long does it take to get and write in the password?

.......and then the cashier has to check whether the transaction has gone through.

When I shop at BigC I just blip my SCB debit card, two seconds.

I wanted to install Samsung Pay on my snartphone to go cashless in Thailand. Guess what, my Galaxy 10+ is not supported by Samsung for Samsung pay!

 

I wanted to set up Rabbit Line with my Bangkok Bank debit card but it said something like "not available in your case".

Prefer the cash dirty or not ....at least I keep it under my own control instead of giving the final control on the electronic digital rulers ....to let it work or not or hacked .

I spent the last year in Sweden.

60% of all payments are done this way now.

80% of all payments are electronic.

 

The max payment for blip without code is 1500 baht per transaktion.

The point?

I shall keep paying cash for simple shopping and use transfer when applicable .....and those banks have also those with degrees in computer science and still get hacked ....what one person can invented another person might find a work around .....
