BANGKOK (NNT) - A medical expert has indicated that Thailand will soon face a surge in COVID-19 infections, but says he believes the Omicron coronavirus variant will develop into a live vaccine that provides immunity without the need for booster shots.

 

Dr Manoon Leechawengwongs, a pulmonary disease expert at Vichaiyut Hospital, recently posted an update on SNS media explaining that the Kingdom will face a new wave of infections that could be the largest in two years. He added that daily cases could number in the tens of thousands, but advised the public not to be too worried about the possibility.

 

According to Dr Manoon, the Omicron variant has evolved from its predecessors to be better adapted to the human body. Notably, it has a reduced incubation time for faster transmission while also tending to cause milder symptoms akin to the common cold or flu.

 

The new variant is thought to be evolving along the lines of other known coronavirus strains, such as those that cause the common cold in children. These strains are rarely found in adults as most people develop an immunity after contracting these viruses as children.

 

Dr Manoon believes the Omicron strain will eventually infect everyone, whether they have been vaccinated or not, causing entire populations to achieve herd immunity. He suggests that the variant will operate as a live attenuated vaccine, delivering stronger immunity stimulation than existing COVID vaccines.

 

The expert noted as well that the outlook for vaccine manufacturers may not be as bright going forward as a consequence of this trend.

What? At least for research and development it certainliy is bright. Biontech is booming here in germany (suddenly even making City of Mainz and Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) a wealthy state due to taxes) and you hear scientists speaking of the twenties as a "virology decade"

Just a theory.

Another theory is what WHO is saying.

Much of the world is barely vaccinated at all.

Meaning unknown new variants are coming.

Don't break out the champagne quite yet.

This is what I've read from other experts...that the Omicron varient, because it is so mild, is basically a live virus Covid-19 vaccine, which upon recovery bestows natural immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Sounds plausible. I hope he doesn't pay a price for his plain speaking. There is a lot at stake if the pandemic peters out too quickly.

I think you'll find he just copied this from those EU experts who have already stated similar, hardly knuckleheads:

But while infection numbers in countries with the variant are soaring, the expert said that the highly infectious Omicron appears milder than the Delta variant, and therefore more people will be infected without having serious symptoms.

I don't believe it until Dr. Yong says so.

What he says is irrelevant. What matters is what the politicians and others with an interest in keeping their hands on the levers of power decide. As some cynic remarked, "Power is a ratchet, not a pendulum". Or, to quote Winston Churchill, "Never let a good crisis go to waste". They will keep this going for a long time yet.

i read several news web sites from different countries. amazing how they all publish the same health news

at the same time. i am not a fan of

any conspiracy theories. just amazing to see how there is really one small group

of people who decide for billions others, tell them what is "going on", and what is they got it wrong?

It matters not what he says, the virus is clearly in charge, not the politicians, doctors or scientists.

 

There will be many more variants, the more cases there are then the more variants there are,

 

For example, covid swept through India last year giving us Delta, well now Omicron is taking off in India, I expect newer variants of Omicron to emerge in the next few months.

Perhaps they will be even milder than Omicron, one thing's for sure, once it gets to India it's on a journey which passes through every country between India and China and all the bordering countries along the way, including here.

By that logic he should be opening all borders , airports and routes into Thailand for us dirty infected foreigners to spread our 'diseased' vaccines, I'm up for that.

That is a dangerous way of going forward.  Think of all the lost profits from potential booster shots.

We should continue taking injections developed in 2020 for a virus that has mutated multiple times since then.

If we see the injections to not be very effective, we should decrease time between boosters to 1-2 months.
