Ukraine has made 'breakthroughs' in Kherson region, Russian-installed official says

Reuters) - Ukrainian forces have made some breakthroughs in the southern Kherson region and taken control of some settlements, a Russian-installed official said on Monday.

Ukrainian officials have been tight-lipped about the scale of their counter-offensive in the south, but Russian military bloggers have described Ukrainian tanks advancing along the bank of the Dnipro river.

Russia formally moved to annex four Ukrainian territories last week, including Kherson region, but none are fully under the control of Moscow's forces and Ukraine continues to wage a counter-offensive in the south and east.

And the news is getting better. Reports are that Ukrainian forces have advanced at least 40 kilometers and threaten to encircle Russian troops in Kherson. Lots of Russians, though far from all, seem to have gotten away in Lyman. But in Kherson, they've got the river at their backs and the bridges are destroyed or unsuitable for transport. If the shape of previous defears is anything to go by,  the Russian forces in the South are at the point of collapse. But this time it may be a mass surrender instead of a rout. Here's hoping.'

Here's an encouraging take on recent events. Well, encouraging to some of us.

Russian forces poised for ‘major defeat’ in Kherson, says DoD official

The Pentagon’s international affairs chief said Monday that Russia’s new losses in the strategic southern Kherson region are about to spiral into a “major defeat” that would give Ukraine a defensive position amid “hot fighting” expected this winter.

After news that Ukrainian forces broke through Moscow’s defenses in Kherson, which Moscow saw as the gateway to Odessa, Assistant Defense Secretary for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander said the Ukrainians were on the verge of pushing back the main Russian bridgehead across the Dnipro River.

“That would be a major defeat for Russia because it pushes back even more Russia’s ambition to take Odessa, which was one of the stated objectives earlier this year,” Wallander said at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event.

Kadyrov says he’s sending his three sons (14, 15 and 16 years old) to the front in Ukraine. If that is true, he’s an even bigger a-hole than I thought and his sons will be so grateful! Not.

But somehow I suspect they won’t see any action and will be kept far from any danger. Can’t have any sons of the great Chechen leader go home in a body bag, or missing an arm or a leg, now can we?

Yep, child soldiers now being openly recruited direct from Kadyrov himself

Was reading in an overseas news paper about a train from Russia that is linked to moving nuclear ammo for the Russian defense agency.

If that proves to be true it could have big implications.

That is something i will follow closely.

Seems to be mixed messages coming out about that?

Putin ‘orders nuclear military train to Ukraine’

President Putin is set to demonstrate his willingness to use weapons of mass destruction with a nuclear test on Ukraine’s borders, Nato is believed to have warned its members.

The Kremlin has been signalling its readiness for a significant escalation as Russia loses ground on the battlefield. Fears over Putin’s earlier hints that he might resort to such tactics heightened yesterday with claims that a train operated by the secretive nuclear division was destined for Ukraine.

Reports of a 'nuclear train' heading to Ukraine should be treated with caution

Forbes McKenzie, former British Army intelligence officer and chief executive of McKenzie Intelligence Services Ltd, told Sky News: "The train that has been observed has all the signatures of the 12th Main Directorate."

The 12th Main Directorate is responsible for the safe-keeping, maintenance, transportation and disposal of the country's nuclear arsenal.

"The signature equipment that is being seen is a BPM-97 armoured vehicle which we know the 12th Directorate have but it is a utility vehicle which we see throughout Russian force such as the Border Guard," he said.

https://news.sky.com/story/reports-of-a-nuclear-train-heading-to-ukraine-should-be-treated-with-caution-12711904

The report below also refers to the train but also mentions the separate movement of the nuclear subs.

Russia’s “Nuclear Train” Is Not Necessarily What The Media Is Portraying It To Be

Separate reports today said that Russia's huge special missions submarine Belgorod, understood to be capable of firing nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered Poseidon 'doomsday torpedos,' appears to have put to sea. Video also surfaced recently on social media showing transporter-erector-launchers for the Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile, which can carry nuclear or conventional warheads, along with associated reloading vehicles, being moved by train, though it's unclear when or where that footage was shot.

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/russias-nuclear-train-is-not-necessarily-what-the-media-is-portraying-it-to-be

Putin has threatened the West with nuclear strikes on many occasions over Ukraine, ever since he warned the US about stationing missile defences there in 2008.  Then again in 2014, if Ukraine tried to retake Crimea.

Yet he has caved in on every instance.

Though we should be mindful of the possibility, we should also keep the latest threat in context of his past behaviour.

Are Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats a bluff? In a word – probably

"Since the invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has waggled its nuclear arsenal so many times it’s starting to become tedious. Even the most peripheral slight is apparently fair game, like former President Dmitry Medvedev’s invocation of nuclear retaliation if the International Criminal Court (ICC) pursued war crimes investigations against Russian soldiers".

He's probably trying to generate fear, but no one can be certain.

The problem with dealing with nuclear blackmail is that the consequences of standing up to it are scary but uncertain, while the consequences of caving in to it are more scary and more predictable:  Russia will use the tactic repeatedly, China will begin using it, and every nation (or terrorist group) capable of developing or buying nuclear weapons will rush to do so, with Iran in the lead.

NATO, the US, and other democratic countries must stand up to Putin's empire building, in spite of the nuclear threats.  Not standing up to him will lead to a much more dangerous world.

A very sobering view of the war. Besides killing, murdering, raping and torturing, the only purpose of the Russian army being there seems to be to pillage, loot and steal everything they can get their hands on. And then after a few months, and losing (tens of) thousands of men, they retreat. The complete madness of Putin’s senseless war exposed.

Putin fooled the whole world. Experts thought that Russia had one of the top three armies in the world. But even Ukraine can defeat them. This is now a “tremendous opportunity” to obliterate the Russian threat, once and for all. US And NATO must put feet on the ground, before winter (unlike Hit***).

Maybe that can be followed up with similar action against the communists. They have not fought any major wars in the last few decades. They won’t be combat ready.

World order will be restored.

Kadyrov his new general "the bloodhound"as he is also called will

not be able to turn the tide.

The Russian army is too far gone and shortage of all kinds of arms.

Yes the Ukrainian army still needs good weapons from the West but

Putin is now the biggest supplier of arms for the Ukraine.

They'll be stabilised when Putin and his murderers are kicked out completely. He should also remind his State Duma Defense Committee that not agreeing with him can lead to an unexpected fall from a high rise.

Putin vows to 'stabilise' annexed regions as Ukraine makes gains

In a speech to teachers on Russian teachers' day, Mr Putin said he would "calmly develop" the annexed territories.

But Andrey Kartopolov, the chairman of the State Duma defence committee, told state media that Russia needed to stop lying about what was happening on the battlefield, saying that Russians were not stupid. Ukrainian forces are making gains in both the south and the east.

Here's some reality for Putin direct from the Ukraine Ministry of Defense. Great vid showing his potential recruits fleeing Russia for their lives, also a warning for those that don't possess basic life saving instincts

This OP is about Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and daily news regarding that, not your fantasies of the west invading other countries. You can start your own thread on that.
