A huge amount of money in 500, 100 and smaller denominations has been found in the quarters of a deceased monk at a temple in Prachinburi in central Thailand.

Temple organizing committee members at Wat Pa Songtham were looking through the belongings of "Luang Phor Yen Sitajitto" after he died 50 days ago.

They had already found and banked 10.6 million baht.

They thought when they are done there may be 40 million baht more.

Police are coordinating with relatives of the deceased monk in the matter, reported Thai PBS.

Manager had pictures of monks and lay people poring through bags of belongings as well as wads of bank notes in envelopes and plastic bags along with gold jewelry.

Some of the notes resembled old money clearly having been collected for years.

Monks are supposed to eschew money, notes ASEAN NOW.

Well much of it maybe but considering almost no book keeping and lack of auditing, Thai Buddhism is one of the major outlets for money laundering in my opinion. Certainly made many Monks rich and headline news in the past and I doubt it will stop now.

One of my Wife’s uncles is a senior monk and one of the temples in Bangkok.

He drives around in an S-Class Merc (a few years old) - it was ‘donated to him’......... (probably by someone caught by his wife with a mia-noi !!!)....     No issues with him driving a Merc... but it does lead to the question of how ‘abstinence’ is viewed and the fact that as he ‘rocks up’ in an S-Class Merc he is somehow viewed as being ‘more important’... or more senior... again.. money and wealth or the appearance of wealth supersedes all...

Senior Monks in this area also arrive with 2 police car security details. Certain Monks live in quarters exceeding  5 star quality , with adoring fans (groupies) attending to their every need.

Greed and corruption are dressed in many colors and fabrics. These two thrive on ignorance, fear and superstitio, and there is a bumper crop of the gullible in these parts.

Sure.

And cops are supposed to uphold the law, and courts are supposed to be impartial, and politicians are supposed to represent the people.

you cant take it with you, so just store it under the bed.........good thing that bugs didn't eat the money or better yet rats.

I sense a 'he borrowed it from us over the years and promised to pay it back' coming.

The Thai government should promote tourism to monks around the world.

Some temples are straight, some monks are worthy of the saffron they wear... but most are just employed in a huge ponzi scheme.

And I was told that monks never touch money ......... some stash it, others use it for private planes with LVMH bags or some years back on soapy fun in Brisbane

Saw a Monk in the Udon Thani province driving a new Mercedes a few years back.  I asked my now ex-wife why a monk was driving and especially driving a high end car while wearing saffron robes. She just looked at me shrugged her shoulders and never said a word........

It should be known that Thailands Monks are unlike any monks from other countries in the fact that they rival the RTP as far a criminal activity, just look at the several high profile monks that have fled the country...Think Wat Dharmakaya.

I suppose the big question is ... where is it now ?

I saw a few in brown at the Ferrari dealer.

I did send my application to join a temple.

Monk khun farang.

Order for a new BMW smart car is already placed. I want to drive around in style.

The Saffron Mafia is an excellent career choice for (ex)-criminals in Thailand. Selling Salvation in its many forms is an ancient business to ease the pain and poverty of the uneducated masses. (as long as you make sure they stay uneducated, of course)

Your car has been approved and a newly installed roof mounted scanner attached to search out the wealthy who can be filched from.......

Likely to be a silly question, but was the final total ever stated.

They pray for people, help people and take care of dogs.  They need the money.

Not to mention they need money for lottery tickets, booze and business class flights
