Department of Probation is appropriate  since getting caught a very small chance since set up tents are in the same place locals know where they are so you got to be real <deleted>.  Majority of the drunks are off the major roads nightly Songkran is just a bump in the road nothing changes.

Those caught slap on the wrist no national data based linked so probation over and over again then you got the mentality that s slap on the wrist you are doing the people a favor!

Years ago I used to read "The Economist", not all of it, but sometimes there were some interesting articles there. They have criteria for assessing how credible/strong a country and it's economy is. One such thing is a "strong rule of law", Thailand falls down badly on that one, IMHO.

Maybe some police generals in unmarked cars could make random checks of the checkpoints. That would wake the boys in brown up.

They continue to do the same thing ( nothing ) Year after Year, and expect the Drink Driving and subsequent carnage that follows to actually reduce.

Drinking to excess is inbred within the Culture of many Thais, and this is what needs to change.

Why are 7/11 Etc restricted in the Hours that Alcohol is on sale, when it can be bought round the corner at a Ma and Pa shop 24 Hrs a Day.

This is where the Booze needs to be restricted.

Until the Government really get serious about the Drinking Culture in Thailand, the results are going to remain dire.

They’re having a laugh, right? If I go and sit by any major road I could probably point out 923 drunk drivers in just a few hours, all by myself. And the RTP in all of Thailand can’t catch more than 923 in total? Pathetic.

Just curious... How can you identify the drivers which are not drunk ?

(I know, somewhat of a Thai bash), but half the drivers are driving so poorly, their road behaviour is the same as drunk drivers.

The only reason police generals would ever visit any checkpoint in person is to collect their brown envelopes. Although they doubtless have their lackeys to do that for them, since they probably don’t want to be seen doing that themselves.

I see it differently...   They’re not insane, they just genuinely do not care - Its all pantomime. 

 

Every year we go through the same predictably sequences of news events... we’re now on the 7 deadly days. Next it will be poor reservoir management in the dry season etc etc... 

 

The police don’t care, because those in positions of decision making power really do not care at all. 

So... every year they simply go through the same piece of theatre 'to be seen to be doing something’... it's just a game of juvenile minds. 

 

Every year there will be a crack-down on drunk drivers, just as every year there is a crack down on polluting vehicles, a crack down on not stopping at pedestrian crossings, a introduction to a new points system, a crackdown on helmets, a crack-down on street racers (motorcycles)... repeat on a yearly cycle...    

 

 

 

 

 

Let's be bluntly honest; the majority of people you meet in Thailand are as thick as two short planks, many can't read and/or write but will tell you they can and even if they really can, do you think they ever watch any news or read any, as most seem to be fixated by junk on TV or junk on their Phone's !   When did you meet a Thai Shop Assistant ;or indeed, any Retailer or Service Provider that can count more than 1+1 without a Calculator ?   Anyone met a Thai 'Builder' that can give you anything like a proper 'Estimate' for work that needs to be done ?  Could they tell you how much the Labour Portion or Materials Portion would cost ?   Ever met a so called 'Skilled Tradesman' that could actually read a Proper Architects Drawing, Plan or Blueprint ?   Ever seen a Thai 'Bricklayer' that can actually build a 'proper' Wall ?   Ever met a Thai so called 'Electrician' that knows much about Earthing or Grounding, or that actually tests his work ?    Ever met a Thai 'Roofer' that water tests his job when he says it's 'finished' ?

 

When you 'think' about how much 'thought' they put into anything they do or 'learn'; then you know just how Dumb the majority are.  Just look around at how many are riding Motorbikes with Masks on but no Helmet; is there anything dumber than that ?  They 'think' a Mask will protect them but a Helmet is of no use to them or their Kids.

 

There is no hope of improving Road Safety matters here as from the top down they are an incredibly dumb People's.   After 15 years living here i have seen zero improvement in 'thinking' by anyone at any level and i don't expect there to be any change in the next 15 years. !

I went to a funeral in Suphanburi 2 weeks ago.

The younger men were into the whiskey while their wives stared at their phones.

Standard practice now.

I took the car keys, grabbed the wife and shot through (slowly).

Who is going to enforce all this? You need a competent and reliable Police force to enforce, which Thailand doesn't have.
