Anutin pledges to fight e-cigarette 'menace' in Thailand, especially among young

Daily News reported that Thai DPM and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is determined to stop what he sees as the menace of e-cigarettes in Thailand.

 

Unlike many countries that are embracing electronic cigarettes as a means of getting regular cigarette smokers to quit Anutin is following a different tack.

 

He wants to keep the devices out of Thailand altogether. 

 

He said e-cigarettes are particularly being used among the young and there have been questions as to whether the Thai law is strong enough.

 

He said that the law is adequate and the MoPH would fight against their use and fight measures to promote their legalization. 

 

"Nicotine is bad for you no matter how it enters the body." he said claiming that the devices cause many illnesses.

He said he would continue to support measures by the Department of Disease Control against the devices and encourage the police to prosecute.

 

He said that Thailand's anti-tobacco stance has been "world class" and was recognised by the World Health Organisation.

 

The WHO have awarded the Dr Lee Jong -Wook Memorial Prize to Dr Prakit of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation for his work against tobacco.

So are they expecting tourists who have weaned themselves off the more harmful traditional cigarettes and onto vaping to revert back to the more harmful traditional cigarettes for the length of their stay?

Of all the vices one can choose, smoking was always the one that I could never understand.

 

One has to overcome initial nausea just to gain an addiction which, at best, will age the smoker at an accelerated rate plus make them stink, and at worst, kill them. Even fat people enjoyed their first extra bite of food, but I doubt any smoker enjoyed the first cigarette.

 

To each his or her own, I guess.

 

And the kicker....some research in the US is showing a statistically significant correlation between those who vape and young people who suffer worst from Covid.  As an anecdote, I have a young Thai female friend, age 22, otherwise thin and healthy save for being a vaper, and she's now 3 weeks in hospital trying to beat Covid, which is likely just Omicron, not Delta.

Even more confused doing a google search of Dr lee Jong- Wook he was a South Korean who died of a stroke in 2006 according to wiki Lee Jong-wook - Wikipedia ????

Great point, breathing in Bangkok air everyday year round without a properly fitted N95 mask is just as harmful I bet. when I was staying in Bangkok, I couldn't even open the window when taking a shower without coughing and having a sore throat after during the crop burning season.

This already happens often, especially at phuket airport. 

I have my own bad experiences...

Anutin is a dodgy character as are the cronies he surrounds himself with.  How does he say this with a straight face knowing that every 7-11 and small store will sell cigarettes and tobacoo which is by far more dangerous and  noxious to public health.  As a previous poster said, he is just trying to protect the tobacco monopoly and increase their profits.

He was referring to this year's award:

The hypocricy knows no bounds.

As many on here have said, it's not the nicotine that gets you but all the carcogenics in cigarettes so if you REALLY care about your citizens health and are looking to ban vaping, then you absolutely must also ban cigarettes. But somehow that's not even a discussion. I wonder why? (don't worry, I think we all know the answer).
