More than 2,000 police were deployed to provide protection for Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha when he visited Chiang Mai province today (Wednesday), but the sheer force of both uniform and plainclothes officers failed to stop the protests.

A small group of protesters gathered in front of Chiang Mai airport to protest Prayut’s visit to the province. More protesters were reported to have gathered in front of the convention centre and international trade exhibition fair in Muang district, which the prime minister was scheduled to visit.

Holding posters which read “8 years, no future, get out”, “no future, but public debt” and “Loong Too (PM’s nickname), borrow, borrow, borrow” were waived by a small group of protesters, who were barred from entering the fair ground.

No problem, Thailand has plenty of police to go around.

There are currently about 230,000 police officers in Thailand. Thailand has about 340 police officers per 100,000 people. This ratio of police officers is much higher than that of neighboring countries such as Myanmar and the Philippines. It is about 1.5 times that of Japan and roughly equivalent to that of the United States.

They like to sleep when on duty.

This is why the ratio's are so much higher.

The army Generals ratio must be up there as well.

Well what does one expect when a member of the "yellow shirt establishment" steps foot in "red shirt" territory!!

I wonder if he will buy any Shinawatra Silk Products ( a Chiang Mai based company) at the trade fair????

I think all this force on the road is just because there's nothing else much to do ànd simply because they can...

I suspect that many more would turn out were it not for the brutal crackdowns of 1973, 1976 and 1990 which proved that the authorities couldn't care less about the lives of ordinary Thai people.

Mr popularity arrives in town.

That's the price politicians and the rich are paying and will continue even more in the coming future. An increase in bodyguards and protection of any kind, not only in Thailand but worldwide. They can fool and mess with the people of their country but can't walk free without a whole army of security around them.

That little Photo Op showing what a wonderful PM he is must have cost a small fortune, and there he was the other day telling the army to turn off lights, incidentally Tu Tu who pays your lecky  bills at your Military Barrack House ?

Yes, but half of them are deployed at immigration to deal with foreigners.

On duty perhaps. But a fair few just sign in then go off to their other job. I know a couple of them.
