Call to not make cannabis sales ’too obvious’

The chairman of a special House panel vetting a cannabis-regulation bill on Thursday urged vendors “not to make sales too obvious” during the transitional period before promulgation of a new law.

Bhumjaithai Party-list MP Supachai Jaisamut, chairman of the panel vetting the marijuana and hemp regulation bill, said once the new law is enacted, no one will be allowed to sell ganja for recreational use.

The MP was referring to reports that vendors have been seen openly selling marijuana wrapped in cigarette paper along Khaosan Road for tourists to buy and smoke.

Police have admitted there is no law for them to take legal action after marijuana was delisted from the Category 5 Narcotics List.

Supachai said he had learned that some vendors opened shops to sell marijuana in cigarette form, with buyers arriving at the shop from dawn to late at night.  “When the new law is enacted, this practice cannot go on because all marijuana-based goods must first be approved by the authorities. However, we are in a vacuum period right now and we cannot control it,” Supachai admitted.

He is requesting the Chana Songkram police to monitor Khaosan Road activities to prevent such trade.  “And I would like to call on those who are selling it to make it less obvious. Please move back to the appropriate places instead of making it too obvious,” Supachai reiterated.

“During this vacuum period, I would also like to ask society and families to join hands [to prevent the buying and sale of marijuana for recreation] as I don’t want to see the appropriate use of marijuana disrupted because of these practices.”

Supachai said he would try to have the vetting of the bill done within next month so that it can be sent back to the House for the second and third readings in early August.

The bill is aimed at allowing marijuana and hemp to be used for medical purposes and for making cash products, not for recreational use, he made it clear.

The bill has been drafted based on public opinions from all sectors so that the new law brings about benefits for the country, Supachai said “the issues that have been happening now, including the sale of marijuana in cigarette form, would be adapted under the new law so that society is protected as much as possible,” he said.

Regarding the concern that some food shops are mixing cannabis ingredients into meals without informing buyers, Supachai said the shops must comply with an earlier announcement by the Health Department that requires all shops to inform consumers beforehand that marijuana has been used in the dishes.

Call to not make cannabis sales ’too obvious’

It's obviously not obvious enough, otherwise why are there so many forum members asking the same question 'where can I buy?'.

So, he's asking the police to "prevent" a trade that isn't violating any law? Got it.

I guess the buyers who line up all day to buy weed were not one of the sectors consulted...

New rules coming in August???

That will be of interest to a few posters.

I'm guessing the new rules will be no sales to under 20s and preggers women.

It's either legal or its not. End of.

I would not be surprised if decisions on it are palmed off onto province governors causing even more confusion.

Good lord... can they EVER do ANYTHING right? This is straight out of a practical comical textbook.

If they really didn't want recreational use they would have waited for this new law before legalising.  But Anutin wanted to be sure the legalisation got done before the government collapses.  The guy on the committee is from his party and it seeme pretty obvious that recreational use is exactly what they do what as they have vested interests.  Newin's daughter interviewed by the Beeb on her plantation admitted that recreational use is where the big money is and said she hoped Thai society will not have a closed mind towards this.

I am not sure how the new law is supposed to prohibit sales for recreational use.  Of course they will ban rolled joints and they may ban any reference to getting high etc etc and only allow references to alleviating back pain and insomnia.  But the summary of the first reading of the bill posted by parliament only referred to licensing and banning sales to minors and pregnant and lactationg women.  Are they going to demand prescriptions and registration by users?  I doubt it because that goes against their own vested interests.

One big unknown is what will happen if a Thaksin nominee becomes PM.  He would obviously want to recriminalise but his party would need to be able to form a government without Anutin and BJP to do that, as well as get their nominee elected by the Senate - a tall order.

The greedheads want theit hempcakes & eat them, too! This is sure a fun time to be in Thailand. Let's see them squirm & try to backpedal their way out of this one. Those that try won't be feeding at the public trough no more, no more.

Haha, maybe should start with he government not making cannabis front page news daily.

This is exactly what they want.

A Dutchie is a Jamaican cooking pot. Musical Youth were singing about passing  the food around at mealtime. I thought it meant a joint too, for years.

The Thai ganja farce continues.

I note the major promoter A nut in, is conspicuous by his silence on the debacle.

With them saying 'only for medical purposes' it does not mean under proof of prescription - but they are just doing window dressing on its purpose of sale ?

He returned from a trip abroad with COVID according to the news.

Expect he's staying at home for a week.

As for 'farce', more to do with the 0.2% trolls and the media 'MJ kills 20 schoolkids' sky is falling journalism. IMHO the way forward is for the authorities to prevaricate until the whole 'reefer madness' nutter hoo-haa goes away.

I was going to look for photo from my home town of the billboards... so thanks for the photo. 95% sure it is Portland, as says "left on Glisan" (pronounce Gleeson). Any other towns have Glisan? On my last visit (precovid) there were more pot shops than 7/11s
