A Thai astronomer is among a team of international astronomers who recently found a galaxy which is believed to be the oldest and farthest from Earth, about 13.5 billion light years away, according to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT).

Dr. Nicha Leethochawalit of NARIT joined the GLASS (Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space), a project which is a part of the Early Release Science program, using information released by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Dr. Nicha said that, before the launch of JWST last year, NASA offered opportunities for astronomers worldwide to propose what they would like the JWST to study either as Principle Investigator or Early Release Science, adding that she chose the latter.

Good for Thailand...get her to speak with students and share her achievements and hope more kids pick up science and math. As Junta is more focused on military dress and military hair cut for them.

My Thai gf is a Stargazer.

Always looking towards the stars for hope and good luck.

Galaxy now named GLASS-z13, dates back 300 million years after the Big Bang or at least 13.5 billion years old.

And she was chosen because she was photogenic.

im sure her PHD has nothing to do with it.

Thailand could be a hub of astronomy.

I think Uranus warrants more intensive study.

Maybe send a probe.

frequent any airport bathrooms lately fellas ?

The full article says she studied for her qualifications in the USA after Thai High School. Thailand has nothing like the facilities to offer for such study. I congratulate her for personally embarking and achieving such an undertaking. I doubt if there is much interest in following her footsteps by other native Thais though.

Well done her. One would hope for more science breakthroughs by Thai scientists but understandably  there is a shortage of scientific technology here, forcing many to go to Europe and America. Maybe the media could focus now and then on Thai scientists who have been acknowledged by the global science community. There must be some scientists doing research here for goodness sake.

It would probably be more accurate to say they discovered the farthest galaxy away from us at this time.

There are most likely many more galaxies beyond our current detection range.

She completed her studies abroad and resides in USA... after studying in Nakhon Pathom

Thailand didn't have the education programme for her astronomical dreams .

Doubtful she will return to look through a pair of binoculars.

That would be a very, very short article! Try Googling Thai scientific achievements…

Just a misunderstanding.

It was just the moon.

She could look closer to home to make a big discovery like the alternate universe of Thailand where many laws of the known universe do not apply.

And we all know,  where the center of the known universe is.

Well done on finding something so seriously wrong and worthy of criticism as that.

What the OP reported was factually accurate (obviously at this time) while your critique was based on "probables" and "most likelies" and contained no verifiable facts.
