BANGKOK (NNT) - Although the autopsy on the body of the perpetrator of last week’s mass shooting did not find substances, calls are being made for a scale-up of narcotics suppression. The prime minister has issued an urgent order for the suppression of individuals who commit drug offenses.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha’s order calls for comprehensive and continuous suppression of narcotics. The police are to proactively suppress narcotics and work hand-in-hand with administrative officials, local governments, and health agencies. Suppression and arrest of drug offenders are to be intensified and arrests are to be expanded upon. This would involve the use of asset seizures and confiscations with every perpetrator. Drug users are to be tracked down and brought in for treatment. Random inspections will be especially pronounced in community areas, educational institutes, entertainment venues, and various sites of business operation. Officials will actively seek out drug users who show signs of mental health issues and set up an information database on said users. This will allow for the severity of each user’s mental health state to be identified so the users may be sent into rehab accordingly.

The order also calls for superiors to inspect and control the behavior of subordinates, for the purpose of avoiding direct and indirect exposure to narcotics. Public sector personnel who engage in a drug-related offense must be processed under the criminal code and disciplinary action will be taken.

The prime minister also asked provincial administrations to reinforce efforts for sustainable prevention and alleviation of the narcotics problem. This should be accomplished by leveraging all available mechanisms at every level. Drug users are to be treated as patients who need rehabilitation and are to be given career training so they may reintegrate into society.

The only thing he needs to do is let civilians run the government like its done in many countries. They are good in making civilian policies than an Army General who thinks on the notion of winning and losing.

As to the manufacturers, suppliers, importers, fascilitators and distributors, well that's a little too difficult to confront! It's ok to be unusually rich if you are connected!

Why is he wearing a mask, in his own office

Not to mention those two hard drives on his desk, what a security nightmare.

Anyway, interesting that they're sticking to their guns on the fact that the perpetrator did not have drugs in his system, yet they feel the need to bloviate on the need to now crack down on drugs. Huh?

I would expect splashy displays of seized meth over the next few days, even though there are already at least weekly busts with multiple MILLIONS of tablets. If low-level employees are smart they might not want to drive that next load from the north to Bangkok or the far south, both of which are transhipment points. More than the normal number of sacrifices will be made to show "effort".

There will be a lot of talk about drug suppression, and scurrying about, but that might last a week or two.

Meanwhile I'm still waiting for the bevy of doctors to chime in about the horrors of cannabis again, while remaining silent on meth.

What kind of behavior qualifies somebody for heaving mental health issues ? Where exactly is the ' red line ' that has to be crossed ? becoming violent ?

Depending on their definition of having mental health issues ... but I think there will be many ...

Too many drug users in Thailand . There won't be enough treatment available for all . Anyway , they probably meant " some drug users " ...

A utopian vision that will never realize .

Semantics. It affects peoples mind and body in a negative way. Admittingly it has good, positive effects used for Cancer and other diseases but lets be honest. people are mostly not using it for that. They are smoking it and usually with tobacco.

If he was sincere he would look at the officials first. Who are the dealers? Who do they work with? How do the drugs get smuggled into the country?

But, as we know Prayuth is not a man of action. He is Mr. Proclamation. He is best at making grand sermons, then it is swept under the rug and forgotten in two weeks. It is the Prayuth way.

How about targeting the "influential" peddlers?

The constant flood of 'yabba' and others that continues to come in from Myanmar could, in my opinion be likened to an act of war with plenty of Thai conspirators involved.

Someone said something similar about the fentanyl crisis in the US, it's more of a weapon than a drug.

Exactly. Vast military structures need an enemy, and it's usually their own populace.

Cannabis was under the Categories of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Category V till 2020 when they were decriminalized. Together with hemp, they no longer in Cat V.

Yes it leads to insanity, rape, and murder as covered in "Reefer Madness" in 1936.
It's all been debunked since then, except for people of a certain mindset.

I would kindly suggest you look at more extensive and scientific evidence, as there is a clear correlation between taking Cannabis and moving onto so called harder drugs. Also the damaging effects it has on a variety of people such as memory loss, heart, lungs and other diseases of the body.

I personally don't give a rats *rse about people taking any drug as long as it doesn't effect others. People who want to enjoy themselves, kill themselves go ahead. In fact I would have an island where people can go and do that in peace and not affect others, Saying that cannabis is completely safe like many do are talking nonsense. like drinking alcohol and smoking.  There are consequences.
