I would say he had only been floating for about an hour and the bag of weed he purchased was almost gone.

Probably said awesome free lift back .

Fair play to him bet he had a great time.

Balanced on the raft with his belongings, the floating farang didn’t appear to be in any trouble or danger. In fact, he looked extremely relaxed. The foreign man allegedly made the raft himself from palm trees.

Look mom, are you proud of me?

What possesses a nut case to wander off to the ocean on a pile of palm leaves and wood?

Nut case are the main words.

He could have been trying to Go to or Come from from Cambodia or Koh Chang, even Trat IO, did his PP get wet?

Rescued? He seemed to be relaxed and communing with nature. I think he just wants to be first to see THE submarine.......

He'd have to keep a very good lookout as he wouldn't hear it coming THE Sub runs in quiet mode, well until they find an engine for it, but there again it could be grounded in those shallow waters at low tide. :coffee1:

Not exactly the middle of the sea….looks like half a kilo from shore. If he had his luggage with him, where was he going? No mast or sail, so not a lot of control on where he would be able to go. Just drifting.

perhaps a visa run?

This guy will fit right in.  Probably has no money, very little income if any,  and no health insurance.

And worst of all a non paid up member of the seamans union

No lookout required. The water is so shallow there a periscope up the jacksy will alert him.

40+ years ago, Chaweng beach Koh Samui with only 2 bungalow guest houses built, we did close to the same. Made the raft, used sheets for a sail and got out about just as far. Started falling apart so left it and swam back in. 3 days of good fun building it and playing around. No internet to entertain us back then.

Swam round rocks in a group of 5 from Haad Rin beach, 1992, after getting a magic mushroom omelette delivered. Only two bars then, 60 baht a night beach bungalow.

Sad to see all the negative comments from the bashers. They were probably working their butt off in a freezing country until they were 60.

Is this guy one of the big spending, high quality tourists that the Thai government is trying to attract?

I think, when they said 'yachts and other floats welcome' they meant something else...

60 baht a night beach bungalow.

No bars other than the guest house restaurants, and 30 baht a night. Circa 1989.

This guys fits on the other concurrently running thread ‘are there normal farangs living in Thailand ?’..

This guy is a perfect example of some of the out right fruit cakes out there....

The Kon-tiki man he certainly isn’t !!! :whistling:

I can't see anything wrong with building a raft on a tropical island. I went kayaking there a while back, great fun.

Yup... Great fun...      But you are underplaying the stupid of this guy endeavour...  this is hardly kayaking near the hotel we stay at...

.. putting your belongings on semi-boyant raft of flotsam and drifting out into the South China sea is quite different...  IF you see nothing wrong with this you’re as mentally deranged as this guy !!!  ????

Well... being on Magic Mushrooms or anything would certainly explain this behaviour...

We’ve all done stupid things in the past and remembered it fondly......  that doesn't make what this guy was attempting any less stupid !!...

... but it begs the question... what exactly was he attempting ???

Just out for a day trip or did he really believe he could get to another island or even float into Cambodia ???

Moron.

Palm trees are actually a variety of grass.

They don't grow logs but a dense form of grass with no bark.  Give them some time to absorb water and they'll sink.

Oh dear, giving the retired farang who wear checked shirts and socks a bad name.
